that'd be a Desert Eagle Mark XIX, which is indeed a massively oversized dumb fun handgun. Not custom, but expensive and impractical for anything short of medium-large game handgun hunting (which is itself impractical but fun)
Oh, and I also remember the scene where the black detective goes to investigate the home of a corrupt prison guard and a white woman sees him doing it, calls the cops, and two white cops beat the shit out of him.
They later berate him when Roscoe comes to bail him out, saying the black detective should've told them he was a cop, and he responds with something to the effect of 'when you sucker punched me and started beating me immediately?'
But, yeah. It does really stick out to me scenes where the black detective was the butt of the joke. In current year we both know it could've gone very differently.

You're missing the point. He is a "Gary Stu" by design. He's larger than life, which is why Cruise, as much as I love him was miscast. He's a man out of his time. Too big to be real. Almost a legend like John Henry.

The detective being black is a swapout, but it's ok in this one, because his character is meant to be an outsider who doesn't fit in with anyone in town, and it further exacerbates that. It's one of the few sensible raceswaps I've seen.

They brought in Neagley, who appears in several later books, but not this one. I think she is described as white, but dark hair and eyes, I pictured her tanned or of mediterranean extraction. so having a mixed actress bothered me zero.

He and the tomboy cop have great chemistry as well. Also the black cop is hilarious, but he's been great in just about everything I've seen him in.
