Putting critical reception aside, was this the worst-marketed Pixar movie?
>Plot confusion, people thinking Buzz Lightyear was a real person the toy is based on
>Trailers and TV spots told nothing and kept playing that stupid David Bowie song
>Representation shenanigans that overshadowed the movie
>Shoehorned "Andy saw this in 1995" when the movie looked anything but

Come on now it's a good song.
They ruined it by overdoing it.
The Turning Red trailers at least switched it up between BSB and Nsync songs.
I think using Blinding Lights also helped piss people off Ms. Marvel.
What's with Disney as of late making such pretentious music choices.
I honestly liked that version of Starman but after reading the leaks I didn't even bother. The trailer looked cool at least.

No marketing would make this thing palatable; the moment they decided to make it "realistic" it was dead on arrival.

It's fricking booooring
The entire premise of this movie is the epitome of why Disney sucks so much now. Instead of making a new, original Pixar movie aimed at kids they make an unnecessary MCU-style origin movie for a character that kids liked 25 years ago. It's like their entire vision of making entertainment for children is just gone now.
Even Turning Red was aimed at millennials who grew up in the early 2000's and deals with themes that you wouldn't really pick up on unless you're older.
Pair that with the MCU and Star Wars banking on 30 year old millennials with nostalgia bait, and you can see how Disney is lost in trying to appeal to adults because they have money.
Black person, Turning Red is almost completely divorced from the time period it’s set in terms of tone. It’s probably the most tone-deaf films depicting the early-2000s ever. It’s depiction of the era is nothing but a bunch of random pop culture callbacks and not even good ones at that.
>inb4 6 million replies seething at Mr. Enter for not simping for this dumb pedophile-bait movie
Listen here you uppity goddamn Zoomers. I was several years younger than the protagonist, Mei, would have been on 9/11. And I still remember both the attacks and the months afterward like it was yesterday. Mr. Enter might be a moron, but in this case, he was completely right.
anon, I don't think it was about Turning Red at that point but about clowning on Mr. Enter
I’m not saying you’re wrong here, but nostalgia baiting doesn’t require accuracy. Stranger Things is intended as nostalgia bait for 80s kids, but it’s not accurate to what the 80s were actually like.
Stranger Things isn’t a perfect example though, because it has a lot of crossover appeal to zoomers who don’t remember the 80s at all, but you at least get what I’m saying, right?
Even though it is nothing like the early 2000s, I’d still put the target demo as 20-30 year old women with arrested development, as opposed to genuine little kids
Why the frick would a Canadian give a shit about 9/11 years after it happened?
Canada literally went to war for the first time since 1945 as a result of 9/11 you stupid shitskinned third worlder. All of NATO did. Hundreds of Canadians died or were wounded fighting in Afghanistan alongside Americans.
And the film takes place in May, 2002. Not even nine months after the attacks. They were still searching the wreckage of the World Trade Center for body parts at that point.
Damn, must suck getting roped into a couple bullshit wars. Better luck next time!
Canada is a vassal of the US.
This. Everybody finds the idea of shitting on Enter funny, but the haters were missing the bigger point that, yea, Turning Red use of “early 2000s” is really bizarre. In terms of accuracy it doesn’t feel even a bit like the time period it claims to take place in. Even down to obvious details like giving kids modern day zoomer haircuts. People who did not grow up during that time will not miss any references that aren’t already explained in the movie, but it being a “time capsule” does not lend any nostalgia to them. It’s a very modern story that does not gain anything from being set in the past. The 2000s setting only serves the creators because it reflects their own upbringing. If this story is truly autobiographical it opens a lot of strange questions about the director and her relationship with her family. Just strange all around.
>If this story is truly autobiographical it opens a lot of strange questions about the director
She's a furry who's into TF, question answered.
Read interviews with Domee Shi and it is overtly stated that the film is semi-autobiographical with several scenes being based off of events that actually happened. Mei's appearance is partly modeled after Domee Shi too.
If you weren't there for the early threads people were absolutely shitting on Shi and inquiring into her relationship with her parents. IMO the worst was seeing other currently working animators praising the semi-autobiographical approach to storytelling which just made me fear more of the same.
No, he was wrong about the 911 shit. Canadian kids did not care at all. Parents? Probably, but not for that long. Americans seem to think the rest of the world sees the world the same way they do.
>Boogie2988

I, for one, am from the tristate area and did not give a shit about 9/11 and played with my friends.
I remember the 9/11 attacks. It was on everyone's mind back then and if you were in America it was really wild.
Turning Red seems just for girls that just discovered periods, actual 20 or 30 years old women consider it a Minions tier movie. (At least based on my experience, free to say I'm full of shit)
The actual audience is 14 something girls on twitter that joke about their periods or being kpopdykes.
Also possible some pooner that self insert as Mei turning into something she doesn't feel she is but actually always was.
Point is, TR is for boy band dykes since every gen has them since Beatles
there are to many 20 to 40 year old women who love the minions, even if they haven't seen the movie, so I wouldn't put turning red that high up on the awareness scale
Touche, I needed to think it better.
You're right
You stupid Black folk are the worst. When you were a kid, you watched movies from people who wrote about their childhood. The people who are making movies now are the same age as you, so you think movie today are "nostalgia-baiting" when really they're doing what people have always been doing--writing stories about their experiences.
I didn't care about movies my dad liked when I was a kid, moron. You're projecting. This is a new trend.
I think you missed his point, my dude.
No I didn't, my fricking moronic subhuman idiot mongrel dumbass.
No, it's you who's [label1] [label2] [label3] [label4]
Your post doesn’t apply to Lightyear then because it’s a soulless franchise reboot. I would be very concerned if Turning Red was about a child’s actual experiences.
No. I know some people get autistic when they hear counterarguments to “needed better marketing”, but that was not the problem. Everybody in the target demo was aware this film was coming out, and it was immediately clear what made this different from Toy Story. The problem is it was a product nobody wanted.
Maybe it’s difficult to explain why because there isn’t just one reason, but from like 5 or 6 strong deterrents people figured they did not need to see this. Having a few extra ad spots in their face or making a poster a different color would not have changed anything. You would need to modify the movie itself to be more appealing.
they managed to make a drab, soulless product that caused disinterest in everyone and then topped that off by calling it "the movie Andy watched in 1995" outright pissing everyone off, doubly so for those that remember Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
And if that wasn't enough they tried to use woke pandering to advertise it. A thing that never works.
>And if that wasn't enough they tried to use woke pandering to advertise it. A thing that never works.
I think it does. Depending on the thing. Just look at Deadendia. No one would give a shit if it wasn't for the main character. I would also say to an extend TOH too but the shipping appeal is also involved.
Anon, The Owl House got fricking cancelled because the only ones who cared to watch it were millenials, and Deadendia talk is fricking...dead.
Wait, are you that homosexual spamming Norma threads?
>Just look at Deadendia. No one would give a shit if it wasn't for the main character.
Nobody gave a shit regardless.
>I would also say to an extend TOH too
The show that dropped so hard they cancelled it, cut down an entire season to 3 specials, and who's creator is currently mid breakdown?
Worked like a charm!
It was so fricking boring
Let's call a spade a spade. No parents wanted their kids be subject to globalhomosexual israeliteery homosexualry.
Encanto's success proved that wrong
>Encanto
Yes because you wanting to believe a character is gay makes them gay.
There isn't a single gay character in Encanto
THERE WERE NO GENTLEMINIONS AT MY LOCAL THEATRE! WHAT THE FRICK IS GOING ON?
>Representation shenanigans that overshadowed the movie
Literally no one gives a frick about this other than conservatives. Most of the world doesn’t share your views.
Most of the WESTERN world you mean. It got banned everywhere else.
Are conservatives are not a lucrative demo now? Do conservatives not consume entertainment?
Less and less of late.
Also older, less woke stuff is more available than ever.
I've been rewatching the Sharpe series for like the 5th time.
What a drab, soulless existence. Lightyear would be perfect fort you.
RIFLES!
>Do conservatives not consume entertainment?
These threads *are* the entertainment they consume. Outrage at shit the libs are doing is basically its own genre now.
>These threads *are* the entertainment they consume
Well that and, you know, Top Gun Maverick which had its biggest numbers come from red state cinemas and not only that remained on top in those states for weeks giving it the crazy long legs past an already gonzo opening that let it pass Dr Strange's even bigger opening and continue on until it became the highest grossing movie of the year, just like how liberal media absolutely shredded Joker only to have it go on to outgross even Rise of Skywalker due to strong legs in red states.
But, you know, ASIDE FROM THAT, I'm sure they don't pay for media because poor hillbillies or some shit
Is Top Gun Maverick doing well in red states supposed to be some kinda gotcha? Because saying that people like propaganda that panders to them isn't really a particularly strong argument against my point.
so go woke go broke is real?
Only if it's true that conservatives lack empathy and hate stuff that isn't about them. Because it's not like "the libs" are avoiding Top Gun, so it's gotta be a one way street.
He says this unironically while libs on Twitter are actively condemning the movie.
>Because it's not like "the libs" are avoiding Top Gun, so it's gotta be a one way street.

>The sequel overperformed in the western US, Rockies, South Central, and southeastern US, was at norm in the Midwest, and underperformed in the Northeast.
Lemme guess, this didn't prove anything either? Total mystery how this cope is gonna go.
>Lemme guess, this didn't prove anything either?
Well, it does say it overperformed in the western us. You can't get more west than california.
I don't follow twitter checkmarks, sorry.
or fighter jets are just cool, and marxism is not
>Because saying that people like propaganda that panders to them isn't really a particularly strong argument against my point.
>I know I said they're not a big audience and just got slapped with reality saying hey they're actually bigger than anything we've pushed so far in a thread about a massive fricking bomb that did nothing BUT pander to the people I said were a bigger audience
>But do you really think you proved anything at all?
As big a hit as Pixar's had in the last two years.
I think Maverick did well because it's just a really good movie and did exactly what it was advertised as, a movie about Maverick teaching some younger pilots to take on a really dangerous mission. It also probably helped that they actually flew the jets and didn't just do the whole thing with cheap CGI.
And didn't treat Maverick like a joke that the new characters just shit on because they need to prop them up a the new badasses.
Buzz wasn't a joke, man.
He was the only functional member of the team and for once one that's severe because he cares without being an butthole
And in the leadin didn't have any real idpol to push so all they talked about was "Practical jets" "Lots of dogfighting" "Maverick is back and he's still an ace", you know stuff about the movie that makes people want to go "Wow I've gotta see that shit".
Lightyear was "Let me tell you in a thousand different ways how amazing this ten second kiss is and make it seem like this is the entire focal point of the movie because we literally do not even mention Zurg in the interviews and the trailers all only show one planet because oops it's all on one fricking planet"
I bet Tom Cruise refused to let Hollywood turn Maverick into a cuck and was staunch about it.
He fricked up The Mummy remake by using his weight to turn it from horror to an action superhero flick, but pulling his weight here likely saved this movie.
most threads in this site pre-release were all filled with extreme racial shitposting to distract from the Zurg reveal which had already been leaked months ago.
They knew they had to bury that leak.
>make terrible plot nobody will like
>it leaks
>distract everyone with race/homo
>it works
>nobody watches the movie to find out how shit the plot is.
Wouldn't it be easier to just not make a shit movie?
Current Pixar apparently seems unable to.
shenanigans that overshadowed the movie
Did they?
It was so little and so token Disney could have released it in antigay third world shitholes and they wouldn't notice it.
The actual main character was and it's still Buzz
Then why is it all anyone talks about regarding the movie?
Because it’s easy bait to serve a culture war of people who don’t care about anything else.
So it worked then?
Only for people that never had any intention of watching the movie in the first place. People that did found that it’s such a minuscule non-issue that it’s not even worth talking about when discussing why the movie didn’t work.
The movie didn't work because it wasn't about Lightyear. It's as simple as that. They shoulda cut the side crap and only featured MC, would've improved it vastly.
While I agree the side characters are impressively lame, this Buzz is nothing to write home about either.
I’ve seen some post-mortem discourse say “wait, why COULDN’T it have been Tim Allen?” Putting the character of Toy Story Buzz in this movie and having him react to the serious, dramatic stakes with his bull-headed corny optimism would’ve easily made the film more enjoyable.
Pixar wanted to commit to a grittier tone (even though there’s nothing explicitly dark in the movie), so that’s why everybody is so boring. With stories like that you need really compelling drama, memorable action, or a 10/10 villain to make up for flat protags. This film had none of those.
I mean even if you cut out all the side shit it's literally a movie about Buzz Lightyear who's message is
>Hey, don't go on space adventures! Stick around on earth and do regular shit! Wanting to go on space adventures is bad!
Just, at the core, what the frick are you supposed to do with that besides stare in disbelief?
>such a minuscule non-issue
It's as big as they made it out to be in marketing.
You don't brand every critic as homophobic then brush off the homosexual scenes.
Yeah that's true, I was talking about the actual movie in which the kiss was tokenized gay kiss
>It was so little and so token Disney could have released it in antigay third world shitholes and they wouldn't notice it.
Horse shit, and you know it.
Seriously use the wayback machine and look at a month leading up to this film's release, a solid month, and look at what the media disney OWNS was saying about it. It was literally all they fricking talked about, if you didn't care about the gay kiss you literally wouldn't be able to find a cast or crew interview that even explained what the frick the movie was about. They pushed it and they pushed it hard, and now that it backfired the usual suspects are trying to downplay it like we don't have easy and instant access to show that they absolutely would not shut the frick up about this kiss to the level that googling showtimes would put a list of articles above them telling you all about the opinions on that fricking "token" kiss.
There's only one type of person dumb enough to buy this and it ain't here.
Izzy is-
a member of the World Economic Forum
>An incredibly dull hyperrealistic "this will be mario graphics in 2012" Buzz Lightyear movie is what encouraged Andy to bug his parents for a Buzz Lightyear toy
I don't buy it, I also hate the twist that Buzz and Zurg are the same guy but one of them is from the future.
Libby from Jimmy Neutron.
Why normies hate this movie? Everywhere I see are harsh critiques, no good viewer reviews at all. I watched the trailer, and it was good (aside from cat). I didn't watch the movie yet, tho.
They are waking up
cuz jesus told them to
That poster looks so boring
Am i the only one who's not mad (that much) about the obvious lgbt agenda but more mad about what happened to buzz amd specially emperor zurg? Gosh i saw the spoilers and what they did to zurg was unforgivable.
Pixar amd john lassester, always said they hated star command and is funny to me how that cartoon did things way better than this movie.
I like it more when it was just a generic good guys vs bad guys in space with a little touch of parodies based on star wars.
>but more mad about what happened to buzz amd specially emperor zurg?
That one's just lack of pattern recognition.
When have you ever seen a nonstop blitz of woke pandering from the media the company owns that hasn't involved the previous white male lead getting shit on? Seriously was Ghostbusters, Terminator, Charlies Angels, The Last Jedi, Birds of prey and pretty much every other movie that advertised this shit from the stuff the company controls not a clean indicator by now?
Gee, I wonder if Thor Love and Thunder, who Disney's media has been very loudly telling us is very progressive, is going to involve the white male protagonist being ineffective in some fashion! There's just so many ways this could go!
NTA but I felt the same way he did. I guess it's more a lack of knowing it extended THAT far. I can conceive them hating Star Wars and superheroes and wanting to destroy them, but Buzz Lightyear? I never considered Buzz Lightyear some "White male hero," and I never would have imagined Disney trying to "take him down a peg"
It's going to get much worse especially since the masscres that recently happened.
Feminists are going to push for this shit to get even MORE unbearable because they think repressing masculinity will fix everything in society. Even incentivizing studios with money to NOT make anything that guys would like for "the greater good of society".
Even TV shows fall to it, GOT's two creators pushed the feminist narrative hard in the final season during interviews and Westworld did not shut the frick up about their "Empowering women and deconstructing masculinity" in season 3 and 4, guess what happened? You probably have to since the ratings fricking imploded after that shit hit. Pretty much the minute they start pushing it you should know that whatever male character you liked is fricking doomed.
>GOT's two creators pushed the feminist narrative hard in the final season
>female protagonist turns into straight up Hitler and has to be killed before she unleashed the Dragocaust on all of Westeros
What did they mean by this?
They put their feminist eggs in Arya "Girlboss" Stark
I saw this movie and the gay kiss had so little part it was nothing and the marketing was just bait.
Buzz is pretty much your old times white male heroes brave and strong that saves the day
There were complaints in Mexico that they had cut the kiss. You blink and you miss it.
And also, people were expecting hot lesbian on lesbian action from the complaints.
Making zurg just another buzz in the future was so lame, i like it more when he was his own character, and was evil because he could.
Zurg was the worst character assasination In the movie.
How else are they going to make a straight white male the bad guy?
Dude, zurg could be a bad white or black male or any other male race for all i care. But why on god's earth they made him a buzz from the future.
Because Buzz needs to be the bad guy so that you like his Black personlings more.
They kinda did a bad job at it, Zurg Buzz was totally in the right
>cursed timeline that results in people eating sandwiches the wrong way
That's a great argument for a reset.
Well since Zurg was Buzz's father according to Toy Story 2, make him a white male father figure who's evil?
The only thing more tempting than that was making the white male who wanted to do cool space shit the bad guy for wanting to do cool space shit how fricking dare you not listen to the stunning and brave POC
Him being a walking darth vader and star wars parody in Toy story 2 was actually funny too.
That sounds like something from a parody, not from "gritty serious movie".
It's literally playing Lego Movie 2's plot straight.
The teaser was unironically good because it showed a fun space adventure starring Buzz.
The more we found out about the movie the less we wanted to see it.
If they only showed the teaser and that alone the film would have donw better

I wish there was an image with a thermometer for lameness with the top bulb exploding for your post
I just greatly enjoyed the terminal list. The animation industry is garbage, it intentionally stays garbage through the actions of people on the inside, and it has no conservatives making decisions on the inside. Not my fault!
Anti Sjws are just as, if not more annoying than the SJWs they hate, but boy are the latter TRYING to overtake them in obnonxiousness just because they can't take the L.
Movie is just meh. "If you don't like it, you're alt-right!" excuse is just that, a pathetic excuse that doesn't even work among twittergays anymore, and never worked on Cinemaphile.
No, I think The Good Dinosaur was worse off: at least people are talking about Lightyear through word of mouth, controversies, and its shallow connection to Toy Story. Good Dinosaur brought nothing of value to the table and bombed because dinosaur movies are and always will be an extinct genre.
He said this, when the new Jurassic Park movie did extremely well.
They made Interstellar for kids when people thought of Buzz Lightyear as a space opera character from something similar to Star Wars, Flash Gordon or at the very least Star Trek.
why did they have to ruin it it had such a great aesthetic we could've got all kinds of videogames and other media but now we get nothing
a remake of this movie will make leftoids seethe like hell
Legacy media died. kids were watching minecraft gameplays on their cell phone instead of watching the movie, things have changed grandpa
Minecraft animators are making more money than the animators who worked on this movie
I love that minions is making bank so they cant us covid for an excused
You remember when people were saying that Illumination were the shit animation studio? And now Pixar has shat the bed so hard Illumination seems like the new bar of quality to reach.
they just needed to make a long episode with this, thats all they needed to do
It is pretty badly marketed because it tried to ride on the hype of Buzz Lightyear despite being a movie that is very different from the popular Buzz instead of trying to sell itself on its own merits.
It's kind of sad that the film has become involved in the middle of the culture war though, because at it's core it's just an inoffensive space serial with a gay kiss.
I'd argue that being boring is an offense to good entertainment.
Because even being BAD has more merit.
...That's the whole point of the movie. If you remove Buzz Lightyear, it shouldn't exist at all. If it was done better, it would have been a glowing success. But it wasn't, so people like you blame the premise instead of implementation.
The gay kiss was unnecessary. It served nothing to the plot. Just admit it was another coy agenda attempt by rainbowhairs at nuDixar.
>nuDixar
