    Why are some speech bubbles round and others square?

      robots = square speech bubble

        Humans get round speech bubbles. AI/robots have square speech bubbles. For a while there was an extremely advanced AI who had rounded speech bubbles as a subtle hint her voice tech was a league above any other robot's but that was quietly abandoned.

        Gotcha, thanks.

      robots = square speech bubble

      I've never noticed that before in the comic. I've been semi reading this for years.
      Is this cause the robots have a more artificial voice then humans?

        That would be the implication, yes. Also when a human character switches to impersonating a robot character half way through speaking, you get a bubble with two round corners and two square ones. Can't be assed to find an example.

      >why does a comic that has updated five times a week for decades get more attention than a comic that updates once a month if that
      real headscratcher

        Nah, the real headscratcher is how both provide their creators a comfortable living. How?

        No, seriously. How?

          He's a holdover frok the early 2000's and people forget how different webcomics were back in the day. Before the internet got monopolized by a few platforms it wasn't considered THAT unusual for a comic artist with their own site and forum to be able to get their bills paid just via banner ads, even if they weren't that great, in the same sense that newpaper comics guys could do 3 panels a day and still make a good living consistently.

          In THAT time and place Jeph was actually a very respected and popular artist. He was known as being more artistically experimental and as having a good work ethic for like his whole first decade and the original cast of characters were reasonably well known.

          Its only after he stabbed himself and really pushed the whole Martin/Claire thing that he started phoning it in and the comic went from being an edgy underground darling to what it is now. But he has enough of a reputation that he can still get patreon dollars on sheer momentum.

    One day he'll be forced to sex up the series to keep clicks coming, that's what I'm holding out for.

      did you miss the part where we went to an island full of naked goo women that had a socially maladept e-girl and a big tiddy rent-a-cop, all of whom were around the main characters in various states of undress and/or contrived physical contact

    Why are the skin tones such ugly colors?

      There's only one character with skin in that image, and she has a normal white skin tone

      Today's strip is a perfect example for why that is.
      As you can see, the author can't be bothered to give each character different facial features, so they kinda have to be colour coded to be discernible, especially when he messes up the artwork while high or drunk.

    Who is the "fart barn" robot?

    I admit, the last time I looked at this comic, the Chinese library intern was inside someone's head with a sci-fi gun, but Faye is the only one I recognize here.

    Even though she is somehow speaking normally. Since when does she say "What's that go to do" instead of "What has that to do with"?

      That's Pintsize, he was the last of the robots to upgrade to a humanoid body. Pretty much the ais are no longer the little pet characters at the start of the series they are all basically androids now.

    >AI rights
    I know Stabby does not do conflicts and can't comment on social issues beyond "RAISINS DUDE" but is that even a thing in this world?

      Hacks has been farting around with the concept of AI civil rights every now and then since he turned the comic into sci-fi, but it never got anywhere afaik.
      Basically just a vehicle for SJW shoutouts, replace "robot" with any human minority and you get the gist.
      At some point he flanderized the entire concept when he noticed he's too stupid for social commentary anyway, even from a leftist standpoint.

      That yellow bot is the rest of all the "AI rights movement" noise, and she's canonically moronic.

      As an eBoomer the whole concept of AI rights doesn't even make sense with what this comic started out as. Its been a bit minute but Pintsize used to have a friend who was like a rovot hotep and the concept of AI rights was played for laughs. But that was probably a literal 15-20 years ago when the concept of a human shaped robot didn't exist and mostly all you got were glorified PC towers with legs.

      Which is like, SUPER fricking weird if uou thino about it. In universe its only been maybe a year since that arc where Hannelore was given what was supposed to be a super early prototype for a human looking robot and her wanting to frick it in any capacity was played for laughs because it was an uncanny valley abomination and it even coming up was meant to be proof she was a loser shut in. The whole idea that there were always these complicated fully articulated bodies walking around when even the guy that invented the fricking things couldn't manage that is kinda fricky.
