A lot of successful webcomics have been around since the 2000s when there were a lot less competition and quality wasn't that high. Nowadays you have to have something crazy to get an audience.
I think it's also that it's a lot easier to have been doing something five days a week for twenty years if you started twenty years ago. You can't exactly go out and retroactively do so today.
