I decided to read it from the beginning, having read it years ago. And the enjoyable parts were still great. His writing used to be amazing.
But goddamnit its become so insufferable around the 3500~ mark. He virtue signals so hard Im surprised he hasn't killed himself for his whiteness.
He can't help but write new characters every 100 or so pages to the point that the story has zero direction. Characters who were interesting and/or fun get zero development. Instead of interesting stories and fun jokes, everything is tired bullshit, pandering and posturing.
Worst part about it is when he teases any hetero-cis relationships I know itll never happen. So why bother teasing it?

Yeah, I made the mistake of doing a complete re-read too during covid, when I hopped back on the wagon after ignoring it for about 2-3 years.
Going at a pace of about 300 pages a day really makes you realise how much jeph has given up over the years. Imo it starts trailing off slowly after the hand stabbing incident, until it becomes absolutely unbearable around 4k, when Brun and Roko were ostensibly supposed to become the new mains. So much effort to establish multi-faceted characters, only to gradually make them unlikeable and waste it all on some highschool drama and an annoyingly sparse amount of cheesecake.
