Claire is such an incredible issue with this story. It’s almost like uncanny valley.
The more the story and setting buckle to kowtow to her and protect her from any and all struggle and consequences the more I (and a lot of readers, judging by here and the reddit) despise her. It’s instinctive.
She hasn’t earned anything. Learned anything. She hasn’t grown kinder, or wiser, or more considerate, or more skilled.
Instead, the world groaned under the weight of Jeph’s favoritism and showers her with success and supplication from everyone around her.
Before this, her flaws were good. Sometimes even endearing. She’s nosy, kinda c**ty, insecure, doesn’t handle failure well, etc. Once those traits were the source of conflict, growth, and plot.
Now? Just more beautiful facets of the perfection .
Remember when she tried to play matchmaker with Emily and Clinton, and he rightfully tore her a new butthole for being an inconsiderate busybody more interested in her own amusement than with other people's lives? It almost felt like we were going to get some character growth for a second there.

It's not organic, feels forced, and it coming after he self-harmed. Why did Claire feel comfortable telling Marten? Jeph could've used Marten's Mom shenanigans for example.
In the Library stacks, in Psychology, Claire pulls down an old copy of some pre DSM-1 guide, thumbs thru it, and sees Alternative Genders listed as a mental illness. That's the thing, though. How long has it been brought up that she's trans? Like, pretty much the moment Marten shot Pintsize down from asking about her downstairs mix-up was when she functionally became a cishet woman. I'm not saying that there should have been a character whose whole personality revolved around calling her "sir", but just minor things. Her saying that she goes to shop where the robots do because they can tailor clothes better. Her being super excited about a girls night out because she's never experienced one. Being slightly embarrassed about being too strong. Hell, even something like only Marten is allowed to see her during her very private and complicated morning routine. Stuff where, if you KNOW, you know. I can't imagine anyone starting the comic even when I did (Yay trying to get Bubbles' memories back) that would have known Claire was trans unless told by someone else.

Glad this is still up, I usually get to this earlier in the day. I know we all give Horf a lot of crap about laziness in his writing, but someone pointed out that today, Stephen Pastis used the same panel all 4 times in Pearls Before Swine.
Pintsize didn't even do anything wrong, holy frick. Everyone else was having a sketchy conversation. Commenting on it, which he didn't even do, isn't as bad as anything they said.

Assuming that isn't rhetorical, much like a syndicated newspaper cartoonist he burned out on getting creative or emotional fulfillment from the comic so steadied out to a baseline that he can reliably shit out in a handful of hours the day before deadline. He can draw more complex scenes, more interesting perspectives, and finer detail; he just lacks the will to care now that he is shackled to this decades-long opus, as if captain ahab were lashed to the side of the white whale and doomed to drown alongside it
