Strangely enough those are actually three separately-drawn Elliots. I'm willing to bet he drew over the same sketch three times but they are definitely different.

I feel like this is leading to a joke where mentally ill people are supposed to relate to how unhelpful it is when people around them just keep vaguely ordering them to “get help,” but Yay is a unique character with ridiculous god powers who could and would conceivably do something actually helpful.

I dunno, old Spookybot was overbearing and callous even when benign, mostly due to fundamental lack of understanding of what it was like to be less than herself. She'd be just as likely to book an appointment for him and brute-force a scenario like with Bubbles or see it all beneath her and move on. There's definitely a degree to which she's undergone character shifting for Jeph's convenience (like Hannelore... twice) but I think spending time with people is also taking the edge off of her.
I agree, and I would also prefer if Yay and her clone menagerie were out there Wintermuting it up and unwittingly upending the lives of mortals caught in her wake. She's been turned into a charmingly anxious uwu gay, same as everyone else. But in a lot of ways that's the price of admission for a character to be present for more than an arc, both because it's all Jeph cares to write but also because there's a plurality of them now so there's not room for anything else. Yay could get Marten's mom killed by a hacked robo-bulldozer and he'd have a self-depreciating quip and maybe a band quote from 2005. There's no traction there. No pathos.

Jeph is physically incapable of writing about any topic with any amount of depth.
He has no attention span for it.
It doomed his stand-alone sci-fi comic but it is true of any other "issue" or setting in this comic.
Mental issue are cured in 5 strips, complex work problems just disappear, character hobbies are mentioned a couple of times and never again, etc.
He doesn't give enough of a shit to write a complex character like a super-AI.
