The first movie was an absolutely fantastic callback to those 70's American thriller hero like Dirty Harry where it's atmospheric, slow burn in the right way and lets you soak in the story and aesthetics while having a pulpy thriller plot to boost. it's easily one of the best movies made after the 1980's.

all these streaming shows are padded as frick and boring, repetitive stretches. like 10-20 hour shows that should be 2 hours movies at most. thats how padded the content is. disney shit is the same problem. andors first episodes are like 15 minutes of boring ass walking or following a droid through multiple scenes where nothing happens. and thats allegedly a "good" show (its shit). its all content. thats the problem. rose colored glasses for netflix marvel is big offender of this - like 10-15 episodes, but only enough content for maybe 5. they get a pass because they at least are trying and putting effort in on writing and acting. you can sit through some repetitive or massive down time/boring scenes to get to rest. modern content streaming is just fluff and boring trash that leads no where. first season of reacher was the same. a 2 hour movie spread over like 8 hours.

i think that's a problem with many of those adaptions nowadays. showrunners presume the story will be more impactful if it affects the main characters on a deeply personal level

i'm pretty sure S3 will also have something like that, he'll probably fall in love only for his girl to be killed halfway through the plot or something, sending him on a rampage of revenge for the killers. there'll never be a relatively simple stand-alone story like it was in the books

i even remember being bothered when reading the book and within the first quarter of the plot or so our reacher goes all over america, a huge fricking country and randomly ends up in a small town in bumfrick nowhere just in time to stumble across his recently deceased brother. insane coincidence right at the start. i mean i get it those books are prime examples of airport literature, but come on. at least try to make it believable. i mean the rest is entertaining despite being silly as shit at times but the part with the brother was alway extremely dumb.
and yeah the dude gets murked off screen without achieving anything meaningful to stop or cripple the bad guys but is still played up as the even better, faster and smarter reacher of the two
