honestly I'm surprised that a show with a strong and smart white protagonist that doesn't get humiliated got greenlit in the current year. the only other recent show like that I know is Mr Inbetween but it's made by Aussies

Amazon have quite a lot of white guy dadcore shows, which almost makes up for all the ultra high budget shows about ugly brown people with god awful acting, writing and so on, that nobody likes but pretend to on twitter

It's a pretty fun show, but this

oh yeah and I forgot to mention - his brother JUST SO HAPPENED TO BE KILLED IN THIS TOWN INVESTIGATING A CRIME!

And he didn't know that! He had legit no idea!

is definitely not limited to this one example. there is a lot of very convenient plotting and the protagonists just getting lucky with clues. and some of the fight scenes are absolutely ludicrous. they look slick, but people take damage that would lay anybody out. plot armor is laid on heavy.

It's not *all* that, there's also bits where the characters get to be smart and do smart things, and get ahead by just being a step ahead of the bad guys. but it's definitely got some sherlock tv show dna mixed in with its sherlock book ancestry, and a hefty dose of clancy besides.

Definitely something you can criticize about the show, but ultimately, eh, it's pulp that isn't meant to be deep. Doesn't mean it can't be, but here, I think the point of it is to appeal to the more base desires of seeing a big guy rightfully smash up big bad guys while not having anyone's bullshit. That's fine, as long as you don't turn it into some kind of MUH SIGMA MALE ideology.

My dad seethes at the fact Tom Cruise was reacher. He’s a huge fan of the books and when he found out a lanky manlet was playing that 7 foot tall gigachad he ranted to me for like 10 minutes about how upset he was

From what my dad told me, Reachers height/size is basically his entire character. It’d be like if Michael Cera played a reimagining of Batman where instead he’s more subdued and doesn’t fight

tom cruise does fine playing a badass. look at top gun or the MI movies. doesn't change the fact that he was badly miscast here or that the reacher movie was generally a steaming pile. it'd be like hiring bruce willis to play the terminator. willis was a fine action star, but it wouldn't make any sense to put him in a role where the character's main attribute is "frickhuge".

Attributing entertainment choice to "IQ"? That isn't what an intelligence quotient measures.
It makes you sound like you need to be perceived as having value based on the media choices you make, and a need to display value to anonymous strangers is a sign of latent insecurity (particularly when it's done so in a reactionary rather than declarative way).

And yes, people who don't have these are limited in that they can't enjoy those shows. But if you in turn can only enjoy intelligent shows, you are also limited. That makes you a midwit. I read the first book in the series and holy frick is the writer bad. I don't know if that was 'babbys first novel' but the story of him magically going to some rando town because some black guitar player he liked lived there like 40 years ago and stumbling into a crime, and oh yeah it just so happens the barber knew him and introduced him to that guitar players sister who tells him a story of how he was lynched and who did it? THE BIG BAD GUY LYNCHED HIM

Also he's fricking the hot single girl cop by the midpoint in the book! And oh yeah the entire town works for this guy who is mayor! And the entire force is in his pocket! and he kills the henchmen one at a time with a blackjack

Not to mention the annoying words the guy used. Every action was 'He snicked off the safety' 'he jinked open the lock' 'wienered and locked'

        >his brother JUST SO HAPPENED TO BE KILLED IN THIS TOWN INVESTIGATING A CRIME!
You know, I was gonna let it slide, but since you're complaining about it... it's established that Joe specifically led Jack to Margrave. There's a coincidence, but only a temporal one- Jack happened to be there at the time Joe was killed. Whenever this occurs in a story, if it becomes an object of critique, I always examine: If you took this coincidence out, would the story still work? Joe could have died earler; a day, a month, hell, a year. It would still leave Reacher plenty of opportunity to realize something fishy was going on and to get involved investigating his brother's death. Maybe the trail would be a little colder, but everything would still work. So in this case, the coincidence is not an issue worth complaining about. QED

I was gonna let it slide, but I just have to tell you: your show sucks ass, Nick

          Anonymous

yeah, in that case. but the coincidences in reacher are a constant. the person he needs to talk to is always still alive, his random ass guesses (like in the sherlock show) are always on the nose even when they're probabilistic, the first place he looks there's always a clue, when the plot slows down there's always some henchmen who try to kill him but he luckily counter-ambushes them and finds a clue on their bodies. once or twice would be a freak thing, lucky, but stuff like that just happens over and over.

there's a scene in S1E1 that shows this perfectly where the detective mentions the body by the highway was covered in a cardboard box and he immediately deduces like 10 facts about the crime, and the detective is like "aw yeah, that's all exactly right". the sherlock show was full of scenes like that; it even had one in its own first episode (the infamous drunk guy's phone charger bit). firmly in Smart People Are Indistinguishable From Wizards territory.

like some of that is sensible - eg an experienced assassin picks up his bullet casings - but most of it is so far out in conjecture land that the chance of any of it being right, never mind ALL of it, isn't better than a fraction of a percent.

I like the show in spite of that, don't get me wrong. it's fun. but you never really get away from the artificiality of it. just because everything in the plot is so fricking convenient. like the writer is applying chekhov's gun logic to every object that appears in frame.

In the book he's in that town because randomly he decides to visit this town in the middle of nowhere because it's where this guitarist he liked is from

And then he gets arrested and finds out his brother is dead and there is some massive huge conspiracy where the big bad guy killed that guitarist who was POOR AND BLACK AND BLIND!!!!

Oh - and his brother was investigating this huge crime for the Feds - BY HIMSELF! And he SOLVED IT RIGHT BEFORE HE DIED!

He wrote down, in code - e pluribus unam as a hint to his brother who he magically knew would come and search his dead body.

These Cinemaphile threads are about as non-informative as the ads ive seen for this shit. All the ads show me is a 5 second loop of this dude walking up to a car and smashing the hood before the title pops up. And the only thing ive learned from the threads on Cinemaphile is that the protag is white.

It's a fun show. There's actually way fewer fights than the memes/shitposting imply, it almost makes he wish he'd just beat on a few MORE people, heh. It's more detective work and not-particularly-deep tension, with a recurring bit where someone tells him to do something, and he just says "No." and proceeds with staredowns/threats/explanation of how he'll stop the person trying to force him, with the violence only coming as a last resort. It has le cute white girl cop partner whom he routinely makes look semi incompetent just by existing and being more aware of his surroundings. He's chad gigasuperman and it's fun to just relax and enjoy the ride. Funny watching so many tryhards getting insecure about a good old fashioned hero show.

On general terms the show is almost like those old cowboy movies where the lead arrives at a new town and somehow gets sicced on some scheme or conspiracy by bad guys so he decides it's up to him to stop them. When he's done he doesn't stick around to be treated like or rewarded as a hero, he just moves on and continues his adventures. Which is I guess why it resonates with viewers, it's basically a modern version of an old archtype. Plot wise though there's only so much you can talk before you start spoiling stuff.

This series is moronic and unrealistic. The MC gets into physical fights everywhere he goes because random people antagonize and attack him.

IRL, no one normal sized would ever provoke a 7 foot guy who looks like he could wrestle a bull.

      >The MC gets into physical fights everywhere he goes because random people antagonize and attack him.
He actually doesn't. I wish he WOULD. There's more then a few places where it would have been great to watch him break some spines, but then he doesn't. None of the fights I've seen so far are "random" people antagonizing him, they were all paid to do it, except the Black folk in the prison and the boxer he beats up in the bar to interrogate about his crooked guard friend. And the israelite lawyer he strangles with the phone cord. Really, he's the one doing all the antagonizing.

Wrong. They where paid to kill Hobble aka the guy with the glasses. Reacher protected him, and then put on glasses to make the other thugs who where also trying to kill the guy with the glasses target him. Both prison gangs where sent by the Kliners/Venezuelans to tie up loose ends.

Why the need to read so much into it? It's a fun show that happens to stand out simply for having a super-competent white protagonist who DOESN'T constantly get shit on all the time, like every single other thing Hollywood has produced in the last 10-15 years. You can enjoy it perfectly well WITHOUT it being about race at all, because it isn't. It's just a classic hero show "just like they used to make in the good old days", with modern aesthetics. It's not cynical or degrading or critical-theorist or subversive of institutional morals or simple heroism. The only racial elements come from the "bad" crooked white cops beating up the good black cop, whom the good white hero (only begrudgingly) teams up with. The whole thing's basically just a grownup version of McCloud.

    >his brother JUST SO HAPPENED TO BE KILLED IN THIS TOWN INVESTIGATING A CRIME!
QED

but if that is the case - why wouldn't Jack go to Margrave WITH him?

He has no idea his brother died there

      >but if that is the case - why wouldn't Jack go to Margrave WITH him?

1st season was pretty good. Doesn't take itself extremely seriously (god I love Reacher's autism, it honestly makes the show for me), has some interesting themes, action is mostly really good.

2nd season so far is a bit eh. Maybe it's because I'm watching the seasons back to back, but it's getting a bit too "OH REACHER, what have you done now you silly rascal?". Yeah I know that dynamic was in the first season too, but it felt a bit more balanced there.

      Anonymous

      yeah.

i also dislike how much of a psycho he is in season 2, and how much of a pussy the cop is.

      >reacher murders like 10 people
      >cop rightfully arrests him for murder
      >brings him in but says he's not even going to put reacher away for life if reacher helps him find the mastermind behind one previous murder (?)
      >the cop begs reacher to help him but accidentally says one of reachers friends might be a weak suspect
      >reacher announces he will now beat the cop to death for this, and commands him to undo his handcuffs
      >the cop does this without question and appeals to reacher to not murder him in his own police station
      >reacher agrees and tells the cop he works for him now

      >reacher then spends the rest of the 3 episodes murdering basically anyone he sees, while the cop repeatedly begs reacher to maybe not murder people so much, if its at all possible

i liked the first season because he was mostly beating the shit out of unlikeable bad guys, but in the second season he's just murdering hundreds of faceless goons with impunity, like random bikers and shit.

the only good parts are where he beats up the drug dealers and the kidnappers.

I mean, he was always a psycho, you see that during the childhood flashbacks. Telltale signs of sociopathy in there, except for having some empathy. Still, Reacher's sense of morality is basically "I have my idea of what's right and if you interfere with it, I will beat you up and your rules don't apply to me." It's just good that he's, well, largely on the side of the good guys. He's basically a superhero in that sense.

But the problem is that the whole thing is too grounded still to apply the same standards as to someone like Batman, IMO. Season 1 was okay because, yes, it was a bit more realistic.

The problem with S2 is, we now have several Reachers. So naturally, the amount of goons needs to increase and the carnage thus also increases. I mean frick, the pipe bomb in a residential neighborhood? It's getting a bit too slapsticky, maybe. On the other hand, silly could work with Reacher because frankly, he IS silly. His waddly walk, his autism...I'll have to see how the rest of S2 develops.

Actually kinda funny how backwards people seem to get this show though. There's way fewer fights in it than it seems, and rather than the MC being the superhuman gigachad he looks like, all the skinny venezuelans he fights hold their own way better than they have any right to. And Reacher continually makes mistakes in judgement that lead to people with information he needs getting away, getting killed, or otherwise throwing wrenches into his own investigation. At best, his Hulk Smash routine just prevents anyone he could have squeezed for actual clues from staying alive. This shit is far from any Gary Stu, anyone who says that hasn't watched it. The only thing he does great at is random encounters with town rowdies, which shouldn't be surprising.

        Tripwire, the third one.
The character's name is Jodie and she(aged up, the book takes place like 15 years later) is the main love interest.
They have this dumb little "I want to frick him/her but I bet he/she looks at me like the big brother/little sister"

I started watching The Terminal List after seeing this thread, I'm already on episode 3. Pretty good so far.

    Might check Reacher out next.

The only thing that disappoints me about hero man action shows/movies like this is in the end they always just kill the bad guys with a quick ol bullet and never go full ham making them suffer like they made all their victims suffer. I guess psycho boy did burn to death with a face full of chemicals but really why don't they ever just string up the bad guys and torture them for several days?
