Red Rocket (2021)

I'm watching this right now simply because it's the most recent film production I could find.

And I don't care what the cinematographers, colorists, whatever say...film looks like film, and nothing else. I don't care what the Arri sensor specs say, nothing digitally shot has ever gotten close to this aesthetic.

Just had to make a point about the cinematography

        the cinematography is good
        the girl is hot
the story is ridiculous, so is the MC. kind of sad too.
you came here so i don't care if i spoil it. you didn't have to make this thread until after you watched it. but i won't intentionally spoil it. i will simple post about it without spoilers.

I don't care about spoilers, I read the plot. You can't spoil a good film, and this isn't even a suspense narrative.

      >that final shot of his face
was it him subconsciously realizing he'd frick her life up like his ex-wife?

i think he's capable of rationalizing anything
that scene where he tells his wife he's about to walk out on her again, and then he's in the room alone thinking about it, and eventually he relaxes. i think he's literally convincing himself she took it well and everything is fine. even though she obviously just destroyed her.

OP you should watch the directors other film, The Florida Project. All of the colors in the movie look fantastic on film like that. He has to be one of the best American directors working right now. Beautifully shot slice of films about sleazy people living in rundown parts of the US. it's kino

          >hollywood brainwashing
this girl was sucking dick on the internet before the director threw her into this film. you homosexuals complain about everything man

it's pretty fricking funny that twitter had so much discourse over Licorice Pizza and the age gap shit when this movie literally came out the same year

No one cares about Red Rocket, because the main character is a sleazebag porn pimp peddler who sells a beautiful, fatherless young girl to porn producers. It's not painted in a happy light, it's a cautionary tale. Licorice Pizza is about a late 20s stunted girl trying to have some fun with a 16 year old social cool kid who wants to her be his first. The age gap in Licorice Pizza is barely mentioned and isn't painted as a bad thing in any way.

Just like in the movie, israeli looks are becoming the new beauty standard. israelites are superior, chosen people both in intelligence and beauty. Having a israeli nose will be a symbol of nobility in 100 years when regular people will slave and fight for survival.

not really, its schmaltzy israelite oscarbait. its not unwatchable and really nice looking at times, but unless youre a gay or a women, dont watch it.

Age gap doesn't matter when it's the woman who's older as long as the boy is at least 15 years old.

Red Rocket doesn't really attempt to portray their relationship as something healthy or normal, its outwardly predatory

yeah but the point is that a lot of people on there don't give a frick about context. it's just like zoomers on here getting upset about nudity in movies. the fact that they made a movie that has some old dude preying on practically a teenager normally would be a huge topic, but they went after PTA instead

Red Rocket was shot on 16mm film stock, you can see the graininess in your screenshot which is part of the aesthetic. The vast majority of movies shot on film use 35mm film stock which is much less grainy.

      is 16mm super expensive
why don't more auteurs shoot on 16mm

        Anonymous

16mm is more subjective, while 35 mm is more universal. It's the same reason you never see a Super8 film. The grain and size of the frame makes it feel more like a "home movie" from the 70s for Super8. Shooting in film in general is expensive, so I doubt there a difference in cost between 16 and 35.

8mm and 16mm associated with 60s-80s due to grain. 35mm and beyond is associated with any time period you want your story to take place in.

      >grain
That's part of the look but it's mostly the color palette, it just screams celluloid.

And I've asked post-production people why they can't make anything similar, I always get "Oh we can make it look like anything, the cameras can output anything we want, just no one wants to put in the time and effort and the lightings very complicated and oh it's leds now and you gotta get the pipeline right and yadda yadda bullshit"

Meanwhile this is literally just a guy putting a cheap camera with cheap film on the fricking street. There's just no comparison.

You know there's some heavy digital color grading going on there. It was shot on Vision3 stock (obviously, since there aren't really options nowadays) and it doesn't look like that naturally.

Zoomers literally can't comprehend the difference between fiction and reality. I think this is the crux of why they're so crazy.
