Religion In Superhero Universes

It makes no sense that Christianity, Judaism and Islam still exist in the Marvel or DC universe. A place where Aliens, various gods from ancient pantheons, and literal magic are all proven to actually exist would kill most organized religion. Has there never been a comic that even touched on this?

I think this case is overstated. We already have science explaining how the universe has come to be, that hasn't changed religion. Why would vigilantes or magicians? Religion scratches a different itch than the real world does, that wouldn't change.

You know, some dudes in white lab coats on the other side of the world saying that your religion that posits that one true god exists doesn't line up with how the world works might not be as convincing as a fricking Norse thunder god crashlanding on your house after another Norse god punched him there from across the city.

Average Marvel citizen doesn't know that.
And even if he does, if Thor is an alien, what stops the god he believes in from being an alien too?

In the movies. In the comics both the 616 and the Ultimate universe, he's literally a god from a literal place called Asgard.

You can't say Islam or Judaism is false without being called terrible names. Even though they would definitely be just as screwed over theologically by the existence of Superman and/or Thor just as much as Christianity.

Why does the existence of Superman, or aliens in general, have to disprove God? Why would an entity like YHWH create an entire universe and only populate a single speck of dust?

It wouldn't disprove the existence of a god, that is an all powerful creator deity of some kind. But it would definitely disprove the existence of a judeochristian one.

Religion may have survived proof the Earth revolved around the sun and the theory of evolution being all but confirmed. But those just prove god didn't make the universe the way you thought. Not that he doesn't exist and that another god does exist.

      >We already have science explaining how the universe has come to be
Even ignoring religious explanations the origin of the universe isn't a closed case, that's not how science works. The current model supports the big bang theory but the current model isn't 100% air tight. If a new paradigm shift happens like Thomas Khun says might happen when a better model comes along we might get a new better explanation of how the universe came to be.

What "Better Model"? There hasn't been a better model for centuries, and I don't see us discovering something that proves the universe is different from what we've discovered so far.

Atheism means you don't believe in gods and don't worship. Reed Richards is an atheist because, despite knowing full well that gods and god-like beings exist, he treats them as just powerful entities that don't require/deserve his faith.

It's not even that religion doesn't collapse. It's that religion keeps behaving as it always did mostly unaffected by the existence of Superhumans.

What is the Ayatollahs stance on the skrull invasion since he once forbade muslims from becoming astronauts? Why are Catholic characters like daredevil so comfortable around Doctor Strange considering Christianity explicitly forbids associating with those who use magic? What's the churches stance on aliens if Christianity is is pretty firm that Jesus died for all mankind? are aliens like Superman and Starfire condemned to hell because Christianity is for humanity only?

you could also point out that the US president ALWAYS claims to be some kind of Christian yet not one of them gave up all their wealth like Jesus specifically commands in the New Testament. This is not the only direct commandment that 99% of all so-called Christians constantly fail to comprehend much less perform.
Religion is not actually about 'rules' or sense or sanity or consistency. It's an excuse for shutting off your brain and having a community decide for you what you should be doing. It's purely for running away from your own radical freedom, existential dread, and anxiety over the difficulty of life. It's hard to raise your kids, wouldn't it be nice if there was a whole enclave of people invested in teaching your kids stupid shit no one would rationally believe but at least it's something and I'm fricking exhausted working two jobs and my husband grew up believing even talking to our kids is 'woman's work'.
They knock a giant hole in how humans used to live for millenniums before civilization in order to fill in the instability with mindless 'rules' you can take or leave as long as you 'repent' for them later and everyone around you pretends they're supporting you when they're actually pickpocketing you and making you say thanks for the service.

        >>But god created mankind to be the center of the universe.
such concept was not really ever expressed in the Bible.
And a cardinal point of the Catholic Church since... Nicaea 2, I think? is that the holy books are not to be take literally.
Galileo almost got the pyre because he kept slinging insults to the Pope, not because his researches(well, them too because he insisted to teach them as "true" BEFORE getting Peer Reviewed)

There are plenty of verses about the stars and the moon and god hanging the earth on nothing. There's nothing that contradicts the existence of space and other planets. There is plenty of stuff that contradicts things like the existence of other gods. and unlike evolution you can't just ignore it or pretend it's just a theory. Thor just flew through manhattan smashing up an alien spaceship with his hammer. It's hard to ignore that.

    >A place where Aliens, various gods from ancient pantheons, and literal magic are all proven to actually exist would kill most organized religion.

I'd imagine a superhero setting would actually make religious claims easier to pitch. People out there today (and probably in this thread) literally believe Jesus came back from the dead, despite that being obviously impossible. But imagine how easy it would be to believe that Jesus came back from the dead in a world where supervillains come back from the dead all the time. Or consider: we see Dr. Strange manifest a beer in the MCU. In a world like that, suddenly Jesus turning water into wine doesn't seem like such a silly claim. Religious claims about souls, for instance, also become pretty believable in a world where people can astral project. And if you're worried about conflicting information spoiling religious belief, then I don't know what to tell you. If conflicting information was capable of doing that then there'd be no religions left by now. Being a believer in the Marvel or DC universe probably requires less cognitive dissonance than it does in real life.

      >People out there today (and probably in this thread) literally believe Jesus came back from the dead, despite that being obviously impossible.
But Christianity only works because Jesus was one of the only guys brought back from the dead. And the power that brought him back was the power of god. It would be just as likely for someone in a superhero comic to claim. "I know a mutant who came back from the dead because of his healing Factor. Jesus was just a mutant. There's nothing divine about someone coming back from the dead anymore."
