Despite the showrunner saying how she grew up with magical girl shows and how it was supposed to be an "endearing" parody, you could feel the vitriol and spite she had towards the genre
That feels like the case with most "inspired" media as well as reboots nowadays, doesn't it? It just feels so goddamn angry, at worst, and at best like someone going "alright now pay attention to me look how I can do this, here's my take on it, look at me me me me me!!"
Production wise no, conceptually far worse. High Guardian Spice's concept was totally functional, but they were absolutely shafted on budget and execution. This show has a budget, but it's in service to two ugly characters whining about being too fat and poor to make rent, and everything "adult" shit is just an excuse to continue acting childish and avoid any responsibility in solving their problems, i.e. the opposite of every magical girl show ever.
High Guardian Spice could arguably have been good with some tweaking. This show needs an absolute overhaul to even be remotely interesting, since Japan already took the initiative on making fun of the concept of magical girls before America did and in far more interesting ways besides "lol the magic wand is a bong".
