Remember when Disney was gonna adapt a short story by Philip K Dick about an old man going delusionally senile and murdering his best friend?

Why would Disney make a Biggie movie?

Because its a heartwarming tale of overcoming life's obstacles

        >Movie about an insane black guy killing his white best friend who tries to help him

The synopsis says Phineas was actually evil.

          Read the actual story
          >Shadrach questions his own sense of reality after meeting the elves until he's appointed their king
          >Phineas shows genuine concern over Shadrach's mental state while others don't take it seriously
          >Is nothing but nice to the guy and even after Shadrach thinks he's a troll, Phineas doesn't really "attack" until Shadrach pulls out a barrel stave
          >After Phineas dies, Shadrach is horrified that he killed his best friend until an elf just says he was the evil great troll this whole time and he's been around for centuries despite him and Shadrach being longtime friends

No way Disney would’ve kept this as an animated kids’ movie.

              They wouldn't
Concept art clearly shows they were gonna play it straight and make alterations
The original story doesn't hammer it down that Shadrach's insane, it's up to the reader to find out

              This is fricking Disney
They water down the original subject matter's bleakness all the time
Even Maui died in an obsidian vegana in his original myth

Wrong, Maui died climbing inside the earth-mother's vegana which just so happened to have teeth made out of obsidian that chewed him to pieces.

Imagine that as an ending instead of
                >Moana just saves the day lol

Has anyone drawn it yet with Disney Maui?

PKD always made his stories ambiguous, just because the protagonist thinks Phineas is a troll doesn't mean he really is one.

Didn't he write stories about questioning one's reality all the time?

Disney used to do a lot of live action stuff. Some of that stuff could get really dark, such as the old, old movie Treasure Island or the original film adaptation of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Yeah but this is clearly just them not noticing the subtext of the story and playing it 100% straight
Maybe stretch it out with a "you gotta believe in magic" message when the original tale can be seen as a warning against delusional escapism
