Remember when Stan started bullying his own son because Steve isn't a man?
He started bullying him to try and teach him not to avoid problems. And it worked, just not in the way Stan intended, but even then he admitted he was in the wrong and that Steve did learn the lesson in his own way. Everything Stan does is ultimately, by his own warped logic, in service of helping his family. He's just also an extremist and a lot of times, insane.

I never liked him when he was some badass cop figure because it didn't make sense why he was friends with these buttholes. I mean even early Peter and Quagmire are still horrible people to be around, and Cleveland is just... there.
He can do better than them.
Now that he's a broken shell of a man it makes sense. These are the only people who can stomach his presence and don't immediately discard him when he says something disgusting like needing to clean his colostomy bag or when they see his horrid, pale, thin useless legs.
My favorite Joe joke is the one where his wife if looking into buying a house from Brian with a slant. We watch her put a sack of potatoes into a wheelchair and watch it fly out of the house to crash on the rocks below.

Yeah, these jokes about Joe have been around since the post-cancellation season, it makes me wonder why some are just not noticing that change.
It's like with the Meg jokes, which pretty much became a thing around Season 3, and yet that's been slowly disappearing in recent seasons.
Call me a moralgay. don't fully understand the emphasis of crippled jokes in this show, it's like the writers have a weird form of favoritism over this topic
The religion, race and sexuality jokes are based around cultural stereotypes, but what cultural stereotype is there around hating wheelchair users? And they all revolve around "You should have a nice day! You should have a nice day! You should have a nice day! You should have a nice day! Your family secretly wishes thar you were dead!". There was that joke about how Joe had a designated toiled just for pooping blood... What does that even mean?
Bonnie being resentful of Joe felt more like they needed to give her some kind of character trait after she had the baby and stopped being pregnant
