I loved this show when I was 15 because I had just started smoking that year and I would go out between episodes to smoke and pretend that I was Hank.

The show was great when I was 16. Rewatched it recently as a 23 year and realised most of the show was cringe. Hank was just a man child redditor, but Bates was pure kino.
The show really fell off once Mia stopped being a big part. The whole courtcase season felt so forced and Hank suffered no longterm consequences. Mia kept the dynamic interesting.

this show was almost perfect, if only they toned down how much of a cuck he was for karen and how mean she was to him.
their kid was pretty annoying
karen and becca should have left the show after season 4 or 5 where it ended with hank seemingly moving on from her and the two of them leaving on a road trip. he should have ended up with faith, or even if faith didn’t stick around he should have chosen her over karen. that would have been character growth. instead he just reverted back to season 1 hank.
To me, the show ended at the ending of S4.
S5 and onwards doesn't exist
I agree, but it could have kept going if they had the balls to move on from karen/becca. imagine if the final season had been not just levon and becca but also a new kid he had with faith or someone else. I just wish hank had been able to move on.
Every supposed /sleazecore/ does this. Californication, Trailer Park Boys, Eastbound and Down, all of them have these boisterous characters that don't give a frick except when they personally hand their balls over to some mediocre chick for safe keeping in her purse.

I watched this and OITNB with my exgirlfriend in 2016 and don't remember a single storyline of either show. I only remember that he landed every chick and his wife was like lolwut?
There wasn't really any real plot in the show. He wants to get back together with his ex but can't so he goes around fricking women and having little adventures which make him reflect on the fact he's a shitty husband/father and needs to change things.

Did Duchovny sleep with all his female costars on this show? For all his sex addiction struggles, there isn't many stories of him hooking up with co-stars on any show. Did he just hook up with random thots or was it an extreme porn addiction? David Duchovny is one of the actors that really needs to put out a memoir.
according to wikipdeia he’s published five novels. I don’t know if they are particularly autobiographical, though.
I was a massive Duchovny autist when I was younger and read one of his books and it was pretty awful all things considered. Although I'm pretty sure it was his first novel, so maybe he's gotten better as a writer since.
I also read the God Hates us book by "Hank Moody", which they published to try and capialtise on the show. Don't know who wrote it but it was also fricking awful. Really ruined my appreciation of the show as we're told time and time again that that was his great novel and a total American modern classic

I'm pretty sure Hank was partly based on David Foster Wallace but with a nore Bret Easton Ellis approach to writing. The DFW inspiration is most noticable during season 3. It's a shame they never took a serious approach to Hank's writing and instead made him a borderline moron and skipped past the creative process which was supposedly so important to him

Yes, can't believe I forgot about Bukowski. They tried so hard to force the Bukowski vibe and it was proper cringe and not even accurate. Hank was charismatic and his alcoholism never ruined him. Bukowski was an unlikable drunk who fricked haggard prostitute
When the show first came out, someone on a messageboard said that Hank was originally going to be an ex-rocker. They changed it in revisions to a writer to avoid the old LA rocker cliche. It explains why Hank comes off too cool to be a writer. Never saw proof of that, but thought it was a good theory.
I like his writing. Much better than modern pop authors, but not really award winning. His music is a bit mid though. Has he written and directed any movies? I think he might make something good.

It's a good piece of Cinemaphile lore, though. I read it on ebook but if I ever saw it paperbck I'd buy it. Although I'd probably hate it more now as after rewatching Californication I enjoyed it considerably less than a teenager.

One of Duchovny's best performances and the rest of the cast is top notch. The visuals are great, but the writing and overall theme is all over the place and they have too many characters and loose ends. The Manson girls stuff and the police scenes are the best part. I suggest you watch the NBC version and the Netflix version and see which you like the best. The NBC one takes out a lot of the forced edginess and I liked that one better. Good watch if you like period pieces set in the '60s with great acting.

There's also an international TV version which is slightly the same as the Netflix version I believe. I think the DVD is the unrated one. If it has nudity it's the Netflix/international version.

The show runs as a comedy and isn’t meant to take itself too seriously. Shameless pseuds who pretend to watch true detective s2 on repeat just don’t get it because they’re jealous of hanks skills with woman. Of course they need to add the love interest/‘dramatisation’ because that’s what sells. Admittedly the bukowski references are cringe.
i watched all the seasons and decided for myself that season 1 is the only canon. it is a perfect story of complicated relationship with a perfect ending. i still rewatch it maybe once a year or two.
other seasons have some really good moments and memorable stuff but all of them are based on hank being a dumbass and fricking everything up all the time. at some point it's starting to get real boring and painful to see.

Becca’s plots made sense considering she was raised by two unstable wealthy, artsy parents in Southern California.
