1) With the EU being wiped out (there was a lot of dumb shit in there) what Luke (and Han and Leia) actually did in the past 30 years was suddenly up in the air whereas if Lucas had made even a single movie in the 90s about Luke training Jedi or Leia becoming Chancellor or a continued war with Imperial warlords, it makes it far harder for Abrams and Johnson to go in and make the whole ST story a retread.
2) Abrams making TFA a reskinned ANH and ending it on a cliffhanger that implied an immediate resolution also constrained the direction the story could go. The lack of time jumps in the ST is really strange and detrimental to the story being told. Some of the best stuff from the PT comes from the years between movies but TFA and TLJ happen heel-to-toe and there's only a year between TLJ and TROS.
The bts info I've read/watched about the ST paints a really chaotic picture even though Lucasfilm had the MCU to copy from and had a shit ton of money.

What's the budget? And I feel like they should all be budget films. ANH was a budget film, and it never got any better than ANH, so why not drop the budgets massively? Honestly even that Creator movie had 80 mil, you could do even less if you really wanted. The big budgets never helped Star Wars at all, maybe a string of 50 million dollar smaller scale movies is their best bet. It might take awhile to build steam again but it'd be a better course of action for them than trying a 250,000,000 dollar Rey movie. You could feasibly make like 3 movies.
