This is honestly the most interesting the show has been in years. is right that the show has been mediocre-to-bad since season 2. I'll be fascinated to see if the show's quality changes at all with Roiland's absence.

Solar Opposites is an inherently stupid show. The in-world explanation for the voice change was perfect. They could also afford to do something that silly because Korvo's voice doesn't define that show. But Rick and Morty has a much bigger platform and it begins and ends with the two main characters' voices. Adult Swim is totally gonna frick this up unless they got that one impressionist.

I still don't get why they decided to make the fake memories from the Szechuan sauce episode Rick's actual origin story and a key plot point to later season "arcs"
They realized they were hemorrhaging viewers and that one of the most enduringly popular aspects of the show (especially among their remaining viewers) was the "lore" but the writers couldn't come up with a better backstory for Rick or series villain.

I remember being so relieved. Like it's so boring and like who cares? Rick is the best when he has a completely different point of view. They should have kept him absurd instead of turning him into a budget bojack horseman.

When'd they say that? Ryan Ridley and Mike McMahan wrote the Citadel and Froopyland episodes. It honestly wasn't until after they left that the show started growing more episodic and turning fans away. The plan was always to build a bigger narrative.
And I like the dead wife confirmation if only because it led to the twist that Rick Prime was the grandpa who disappeared for 20 years. I just hope they aren't hyping up "the hunt for him" only to put that on the back burner and have it take another 2-3 seasons before we actually interact with the guy. They're giving him way more focus and buildup than any of the Evil Morty shit.
Mr. Poopy Butthole is confirmed evil, huh? His life is ruined because of the family's antics, the story train episode turned him into a villain which will likely come to fruition given that most of the what if scenes in it became true, and now he's next to Rick Prime. Wonder if the show is ever going to call Rick out for being a shitty friend to both him and Squanchy.

In 2018 when Rick and Morty was at peak popularity, they negotiated an order of 70 more episodes. Season 10 is when that runs out.
Yeah and it was insane that they did that, yet they think supporting smaller shows that have a ton of potential and room for audience growth is too risky.

I really wish we could go back to the days of 2014 and 2015. Where this show was still exciting and we would be waiting on the edge of our seats for new episodes. Where it was just a simple moronic show about a crazy fricked up scientist and his idiot grandson. I blame Harmon mostly. Community season 3 did not need that ongoing plot with Chang taking over the school. And this show didn't need any drama arcs or divorce crap.
Night Family was fun, Citadel shit is also cool. Not sure what your problem is
Season 6 is the best the show has been since it shat the bed and the anime is likely to be good as well. “Zombie” Rick and Morty is still fun.
It's not consistently funny, but it is fun.
The peak of the show was definitely the start of season 2. Everything was still fun and bright and the first few episodes were pretty good. Then the season got shittier and the show never recovered.
I can't even remember anything from season 6.
I hope the new seasons place less focus on the family as a whole and put it back on Rick and Morty. The Beth episodes suck. Jerry episodes and Summer episodes are ok but mostly suck too.
Summer and Jerry can be entertaining but Beth just has no personality. Then they added Space Beth and never fixed the actual Beth.
Beth should be a decently entertaining/interesting character when you think about it but somehow she's just so bland to watch. Her father, her hero, neglected and abandoned her when she was young. Instead of accepting that he's just a shitty dad, she puts him on a pedestal so when "he" mysteriously returns 20 years later, she lets him walk all over her and her family so he won't leave this time and lets her kids get dragged around the universe by an alcoholic lunatic because she'd rather they take after him than her mediocre husband. She probably thought she was destined for great things as his daughter, but her dreams were crushed when she got knocked up by her loser high school boyfriend and became a teen mom. Because she didn't get to go to medical school, she has a massive chip on her shoulder and an ego disproportionate to her accomplishments. She resents Jerry because he's pathetic but loves that he sucks up to her. She desperately wants to be part of her father's life and yet Rick usually held her at arm's length. She feels bored with her life but hardly knows anything else, and could get way too into anything that gives her some sense of excitement. Any of these could be sources for jokes, conflict, or character development, but every time the writers have gone to that well since maybe season 2, it just falls flat.
They never give her anything fun to do, she always comes off as a stick in the mud.
The one time she was actually really funny was when she shot Mr. Poopybutthole and then ran crying to the kitchen to drink some wine. Fricking hilarious. Nothing close to that since.

Stick-in-the-mud and that scene nails it. In a better version of this show, they'd go in on Beth being a Rick-lite who never got to live the Rick life so she has this unhinged personality simmering under the suburban mom persona, and whenever she tries to do a Rick-type thing it blows up in her face because her ego outsizes her experience. It's not even like the writers had an excuse not to do it because it feels misogynist because Summer can be a competent counterweight.
Beth has always sucked. She's only good for tying things back to Diane and bringing out Rick's fatherly side. Summer can be fun when she's being an airhead. I did like her taking over in Night Family tho. Great use of the character. Jerry is perfect and we could all use more of him. I actually like the family being more involved in sci-fi shit alongside Rick, but I do think it makes sense to pair up Rick & Morty alone since they're equals now and are hunting Rick Prime.
