They knew the exact line between exquisite detail and keeping it simple and that is why the movies succeed and Amazon fails.
Amazon looks like it was overdesigned crap made by video game developers who want to show off how hi-rez their materials are and how many polygons the newest Nvidia GPU can push. It has more in common with Assassin's Creed than it does Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy.
