Bond was Eton grad and an then officer in the RN at the age of 17 in 1939. Eventually ended up in Naval Intelligence. Holds the rank of Commander in the RN, but is Secret Service. M calls him "Commander" because that's how men used to refer to one another in white countries--by their final military rank.
