That first decade was spent making low cost content. The last decade was them trying to become a real media company. That Variety article says at their peak, they had over 400 employees. Rooster Teeth likely survived as long as they did because of (now gone) internet video optimism and being owned by a company that could withstand those losses. I guess the RWBY extensions into anime, games and DC failed, so WB finally decided to pull the plug.

The issue is that they hired too many people, and it's not enough to pay the animators, VA and everyone involved. They should have started off small before moving up the latter that fast. I don't want to see them crash and burn. I really want them to succeed. I've seen people call Glitch the "Nickelodeon Animation" during it's golden age of the internet.

When WB bought out RT they clearly thought they had a "made it" status that put them on par with the company's more mainstream products, everything that contributed to their downfall was a symptom of this and the "woke" part is actually hilarious because the problem there was trying to transition a place based on amateur online talent into a professional company while maintaining the "we're just some jackasses from the internet" part of their brand so it all came into a massive conflict with itself.
Even if we don't consider more extreme examples like Ryan and Adam, the online crowd often aren't brought into mainstream stuff for a reason, they suck at professionalism, something the industry learned with Tobuscus. Look back at the more minor controversies and you realize they almost always involve to "internet personalities were dicking around and acting like internet personalities while the interns and professional animators were suffering from it."

To get to what really killed them though, did you notice how they kept doing these more and more ambitious projects like GenLock and later RWBY/RvB over the years and then it was only after RWBY went on halt that they started signaling about being a smaller company? They thought that Warner buying them meant they were one of the big brands when RWBY and a foothold in 2010s gamer culture seems to be the only things Warner actually cared about. The latter is basically over except for maybe Game Grumps, Oneyplays, and a small handful of others while they likely still hold rights to the former.
Rooster Teeth aren't Icarus's wings melting, they were the Gingerbread man. They ran around thinking they were invincible and when they reached Mainstream river, Warner was the fox who offered to carry them in its mouth, maybe it wasn't always planning on eating them, but they were perfectly content doing so when RT stopped pumping out that sweet sweet RWBY money

1. RT grew increasingly desperate to be seen as "legitimate" as the years went on. You see this with a lot of online indie stuff that goes big, they immediately jump for names to attach to legitimize themselves
2. Funimation actors weren't as cheap as what would later come with Gen:Lock and as it stands, RT didn't simply want, but needed to be the company with geek cred to follow the ambitions they had.
3. RT was parasocial as frick with their fandoms and the VAs they were getting mastered that art years ago, which ironically seemed to start with Vic Mignogna who introduced a lot of the types of fan interaction the rest of them

I'm guessing either Warner Brothers or Kadokawa. Not out of any interest in continuing the story or any love of the series just the fact that both of the companies did stories based on RWBY and buying the IP would give them complete control over the brand and stop them from having to split profits with someone else if they were to do another series.

Even if we don't consider more extreme examples like Ryan and Adam, the online crowd often aren't brought into mainstream stuff for a reason, they suck at professionalism, something the industry learned with Tobuscus. Look back at the more minor controversies and you realize they almost always involve to "internet personalities were dicking around and acting like internet personalities while the interns and professional animators were suffering from it."

The latter is basically over except for maybe Game Grumps, Oneyplays, and a small handful of others while they likely still hold rights to the former.

Hell, look at Lily Singh. She was on top of the world, was getting major celebrities in her videos, and got a show designed to make her the ultimate safe token PoC of late night TV, and then what happened? Internet popularity didn't translate to mainstream and crashed into the ground, her audience turned out to be mostly children, and she was left in the dust with the industry tossing her to the side.
Machinima and the other early "multi channel networks" are probably the biggest early example of where this kind of online sphere was going. None of these indie channels know how to manage the business/growth side of things and they get eaten, it's basically just a re-run of the 90s rap industry.
