Sesame Street has been doing representation since long before it was cool and it does it better than everyone else. Even though the show is aimed at young children, it doesn't assume their life is sunshine and rainbows and it doesn't assume they "wont understand" things. Hell, Sesame Street settled the debate on talking to kids about death forty years ago.
If a kid can experience something, then it's important for kid's shows to talk about it so they can put their feelings into words.
