A Song of Ice and Fire is literally the most successful modern fantasy.

It is not as culturally relevant as Disney and Marvel.

Its hardly a stretch to argue the ASOIAF adaptation has lead to the current slot of bad fantasy a la Wheel of Time and Rings of Power. Who knows how long this dark era will last. Did Sleeping Beauty have a similar ripple effect back in the day?

I wonder if people realize Tolkien was doing morally grey dark fantasy long before ASOFAI was even a thing. This picture makes no sense.

Gurm has no clue how medieval economics worked either.
Littlefinger is supposed to be some kind of financial Wizard and all he does is take out loans.
Gurm just had a vague idea of who the Medicis were.

Also no idea as to how Medieva armies were formed, he seems to think there was a draft.

He also never really shows taxation and rarely mentions it. Hes done multiple "why didnt tolkien do this" but the only one hes actually put in asoiaf is "kill the baby orcs in their baby cribs" or whatever the quote was

The first time I finished ASOIAF I though GRRM was a masterpiece creating visionary. The seventh time I did it I began noticing the cracks in Germs writing. Then I started posting on /tg/s asoiaf thread (the only sane asoiaf thread on this website) and it kinda all fell apart. I used to think that LOTRnerds were salty moronic homosexuals but now I kinda see where theyre coming from. Perhaps the worst thing about it is how hard the Fat Man tries to convince you that its historically accurate

I am here for this. Any particular ahistorical gripes with ASOIAF?

Quite a lot. Everything about the Iron Islands. An entire fricking culture that should not exist. Dothraki are even worse. GRRM claims he researched the mongols and plains indians in making them yet the final product is a parody of a parody of a stereotype. Apparently every town in Westeros has a brothel, yet STDs do not exist. Castles are not used correctly, and Westeros has four cities, four ethnicites and two languages despite being the size of south america + canada. The war of the Five Kings is so over-the-top brutal its more akin to the Thirty Years War rather then a normal feudal wars like the war of the roses or the english anarchy. Religion is particularly bad, the faith of the seven is a very watered down version of the irl catholic church. Theres a rumour that GRRM believes that people in the middle ages were not actually believers and deep down were all cynical nihilists and I doubt that the rumour is true, but you would never tell from the way he writes his characters. Catelyn Stark had a religious upbringing and even brings religious tutors to help raise her daughters yet in her povs she flip flops from devout to agnostic to atheist at the toss of a coin. The only realistically religious characters are Stannis and co. Many other characters who should be religious like punishedJaime, Tywin Lannister or Roose Bolton, arent. To be fair this is all a bit nitpicky and there are tons of other issues (especially with the new Fire&Blood book + House of the Dragon show which have their own disastrous problems, especially with the retcons), and it is a low fantasy series, not a historical fiction one, but GRRM and his sycophants shill "muh gritty realism" so hard that many people who watch GoT genuinely believe that this is what the middle ages were like.

          >The first time I finished ASOIAF
Are you from the future? How does it end?

I mean I finished all the material he released, including the leaked chapters of Winds of Winter

That actually would have been more interesting. Have Westeros go through the Infantry Revolution the hard way. Knights start to become less relevant, bringing to question the role of nobility.
But Gurm is a Hack, King of the Hacks, but still a hack.

This is getting increasingly common in literature and pop-history sources, despite being complete nonsense.

I mean if you ignore the vast majority of primary sources from the period yeah, there is a possibility that everyone was just pretending.

honestly that would be kino, and it would work in ASOIAF, since the biggest appeal of that franchise is its political intrigue. But that tricksy GRRM would find some way to make it kino and then frick it up.
          >King of the Hacks

Fantasy is now all about princesses and singing animals thanks to this cultural genocide. People don't know what real fantasy is.

Fantasy was all about princesses before Disney showed up

Are Disney princesses really relevant anymore? That shit was big in the 90s but I feel like the move away from girly girl stuff in the intervening years has reduced some of the power.

I like how she says "Now you shall deal with me and all the powers of Hell" before her dragon transformation. It's not my favorite Disney movie by any means (not even my favorite from the 50s) but it has some good moments.
