It took a bit for it to click for me too. At first I really had Noh idea what was going on. Blah blah aliens make robots. Blah blah family wants robots back. Blah blah. Japanese government. Blah blah that one dude was counting on America being buttholes. Then America decided not to be buttholes. Something something grain.
Gasaraki kinda requires having the context of being a Japanese person in the 90s. Or you have a degree in political science, either/or really. It's one of those shows where knowing Japan's sociopolitical climate during a given time period helps fill blanks in.
It's roughly the same as watching Patlabor 2. Its amazingly animated but I can't remommend it to most people without warning them about the political themes that most Westerners won't understand.

what's with this "you don't get it if you aren't Jap" bullshit? ledditors trying to soil Gasaraki as a pseud title?
Lmao no you fricking autist. You don't have to be a pseudointellectual weeb to understand Gasaraki, people just require a cursory grasp of Japan's 90s sociopolitical context to fully understand it.
It's been 2 decades, people who grew up in the 2000s won't understand jack shit about the 90s lost decade—hell with zoomers watching more anime than millennials I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of this board are born after 1995.

Takahashi isn't dead yet butthole, and he's still directing. Just because his more notable works are in the past doesn't mean you get to kill him off.
He's solid and makes good shows, I don't think he quite has the visual flair that either of those two have. His boards have good cinematic depth and all that important stuff, but they are a bit plain overall, Tomino and Oshii have a lot more cool tricks up their sleeve as well as excelling in the basics like Takahashi does, like all the interesting stuff Tomino does with cut ins and color or Oshii's use of establishing shots and visual symbolism.
I love his shows but nearly all his work suffer from too few or too much episodes, also his 80s work is great but it feels as though they share too many similar characters with the same voice actors and that makes them feel a bit less unique. Chiba Shigeru always voices the cheeky character, Yuusaku Yara is the experienced but disillusioned military general, etc.
But despite those things I still like his work and Dougram is one of my favorite shows of all time. Still one of the better directors.
I'd definitely say he's on par with Tomino as one of those "must watch" directors. Dougram, VOTOMS, Galient, Layzner, Blue Gender, Gasaraki and FLAG are all pretty good shows.
Sorry that Takahasi is a trend following hack that almost all of his shows flopped so he has to run back and make more pointless VOTOMS sidestories that no one asked for.

I have never seen any YTer review Votoms. You are grasping for straws at this point.

And it should stay so, israelitetubers only bring in underage morons.
They ruined Anno's work and are actively ruining Gundam, thankfully Takahashi is a tremendous plebfilter.
Given that Layzner had double the drawing count of a normal modern TV anime (6000 per episode as opposed to 3000 per episode) I would guess that its budget was well above average. The animation of course is as good as a mecha TV show can get as far as the mecha stuff goes, but there isn't much evidence that Sunrise were actually paying Anime R and Studio Dove more than any of their other subcontractors, and most episodes are their work.
My favourite /m/ director. The only one who tries to honor the "real" of "real robot" instead of angst teen shit.
said in terms of "real" was how Scopedogs are just meant to be simple war machines. Sure you have experimental technology in one show (Blue Comet SPT Layzner's V-MAX) but with VOTOMS, the Armored Troopers are just machines that are as good as the pilot with Chirico's miraculous survivals every time his AT is trashed are what makes people stay to find out how he can survive while his ATs get wrecked.
The characters don't often call it out but the reason everyone reacts to Chirico the way they do (and often underestimate him) is because he's a YOUNG soldier. By all rights he shouldn't be a battle hardened Reddo Shoulder and they're tricked by his boyish good looks and James Spader voice.
She wasn't supposed to "replace" Fyana, and this is precisely the point of AA : no one can. Don't accuse other people of sticking to your fanfiction state of mind.
>Imagawa will never be in a GOAT discussion due to the fact that he’s never made something truly his own that was also good.
Tetsujin 2004 remake was his best.
I’ve seen plenty of anime.
Oshii can’t really be topped. Miyazaki is too pre-occupied with mawkish quaintness and bouncy animation; Anno generally lacks substance, especially complex emotional substance, to his works (though 3.0+1.0 and EOE were really good); Tomino is an amazing writer, but visually, he may occasionally be lacking, not comparable to Oshii’s eye for aesthetic richness.
Kawajiri could have been one of the greats but was too caught up in nonsense action OVAs and movies, he’ll be remembered as the “blood, gore, and rape guy.” Otomo might actually be a hack; Shinkai is kind of a joke. I think when the Hathaway trilogy is finished, Murase may be in the top 5 of all time.
In comparison to all these people, Oshii just excels in every metric.
I wish more of his anime didn't rely on undercooked sci-fi concepts like ancient aliens, ancient god computers, or ancient high tech civilizations that he takes forever to explain and then the show ends abruptly.
It's a miracle Dougram didn't have Lecoque be a last second space jesus.
Do you really need an explanation to wiseman? If anything the problem is that there's an explanation at all.
The argument is fallacious regardless, I’m just explaining that there is no point in pretending that the extrinsic element of how much non-descript anime I’ve seen could change the intrinsic merit of Oshii’s work.
So Gundam? >b-but muh newtypes!!
How is that anything like Gundam?
Don’t be disingenuous
Nothing inherently, but a show like Layzner was so stingy with the details it felt less like it was leading the audience along with hints and clue and more like it was coyly saying, "GONNA BE A BIG TWIST!" for half the show. I feel like the big conclusion would have been rushed even if the series wasn't cut short.
Takahashi's contemporaries like Macross and Dorvack were way more casual about their crazy sci-fi shit and honestly I prefer just laying things out than the pseudo-spiritual wheel spinning.

Don't scare me like that you piece of shit.
I liked Gasaraki
The longest 27 episode ova i have watched yet
Its such a wierd show too, i guess my brain is too small to understand it
It took a bit for it to click for me too. At first I really had Noh idea what was going on. Blah blah aliens make robots. Blah blah family wants robots back. Blah blah. Japanese government. Blah blah that one dude was counting on America being buttholes. Then America decided not to be buttholes. Something something grain.
Aliens? I thought it just was ancient magic
I'd go so far as to say that Gasaraki is the MGS2 of anime. It seems to age better more and more when it comes to its socio-political subject matter.
Takahashi though seems to be more of a writer than director, but he's not nearly as rambly and off-focus like Kojima is.
>Gasaraki is the MGS2 of anime

only a couple sequences, it doesn't have much robotto in it
what's with this "you don't get it if you aren't Jap" bullshit? ledditors trying to soil Gasaraki as a pseud title?

Way bellow. Oshii is a hack, though.
>Oshii is a hack,though.
Nice breath of fresh air. I disagree. Typically its tomino i hear called that & that's wrong also.
Tomino is based and I think the only director that could rival him is Imagawa. But he never had much chance due to all his shows underperforming.

Galient needed at least like 5 more episodes in the latter half of the show.
Yeah definitely, Mardal was such a great villain and him just noclipping out of there like some kind of gmod moderator was really lame
And Layzner, since after they find the Seal of Gradios this Dr. Who timewarp just shows up out of nowhere and deus ex machinas everything
Layzner would have been better off ending at 24 episodes
Agreed.
I legit want to know what his involvement with the new Muteking was as he's listed as the chief director. Love this goofy show
way, way below
Only good show he did was Gasaraki and that's because they had some other guy specifically hired to formulate the story and themes
I'd definitely say he's on par with Tomino as one of those "must watch" directors. Dougram, VOTOMS, Galient, Layzner, Blue Gender, Gasaraki and FLAG are all pretty good shows.
I feel like you'd eventually stumble across his work by accident no matter what regardless of intent.
>Galient
>Layzner
>Good
You're right Galient is great.
Galient is fricking shit.
Sorry you're a fricking baby.
Sorry that Takahasi is a trend following hack that almost all of his shows flopped so he has to run back and make more pointless VOTOMS sidestories that no one asked for.

have a nice day
No u
Confirmed baby.
Same gay?
The loser's argument.
He did not direct Blue Gender, he just wrote the general synopsis.
He made Dougram and VOTOMS, both of which the former directors never surpassed, so yeah, pretty good
He has an understated hardboiled style that is rarely found among anime directors. Unbeatable in his arena.
Did he ever direct anythign with a decent budget? I feel he's good just that he's very constrained by budget tv formats.
Teen angst is pretty real.
I think what
said in terms of "real" was how Scopedogs are just meant to be simple war machines. Sure you have experimental technology in one show (Blue Comet SPT Layzner's V-MAX) but with VOTOMS, the Armored Troopers are just machines that are as good as the pilot with Chirico's miraculous survivals every time his AT is trashed are what makes people stay to find out how he can survive while his ATs get wrecked.

>b-but muh newtypes!!
moron
Chirico is 18 years old.
The characters don't often call it out but the reason everyone reacts to Chirico the way they do (and often underestimate him) is because he's a YOUNG soldier. By all rights he shouldn't be a battle hardened Reddo Shoulder and they're tricked by his boyish good looks and James Spader voice.
You could say the same for the 00 boys, But people here still call it angsty teen shit.
All the "Votoms sequels suck" thing is a myth. 2011's Alone Again is just a fantastic piece of work. Maybe the last true gem of robot anime culture.
>Let's kill off real robot Sayaka
>Let's replace her with FemChirico
>Let's kill off FemChirico
>Good writing.
She wasn't supposed to "replace" Fyana, and this is precisely the point of AA : no one can. Don't accuse other people of sticking to your fanfiction state of mind.
So they made a character to waste the viewers/fans time.
Actual moron.
Good way to explain Takahashi.
>Imagawa will never be in a GOAT discussion due to the fact that he’s never made something truly his own that was also good.
Tetsujin 2004 remake was his best.
>Oshii is probably the best anime director of all time.
Watch more anime.
I’ve seen plenty of anime.

How is that anything like Gundam?
Don’t be disingenuous
Argument? There's no point in arguing with an uninformed moron.
>Tomino is an amazing writer
Nice joke.
Who's the guy on the far right?
Bakumatsu Kikansetsu MC, in 2006. Not a robot show.
is that image supposed to support your argument or what?
are you making an appeal to the stone?
You have literaly 95% of /m/ posts which are about sucking Tomino’s dick everyday. Go back on it like a good boy.
Those aren’t arguments. Your claims are illogical.
>too stupid to understand a simple sentence
>not smart enough to argue rationally
>though 3.0+1.0
it was shit..badly written and directed, good animation does not replace those things.
>>What is wrong with them being there?

lol
>Oshii is probably the best anime director of all time.
Layzner is great.
He was the ultimate /m/ director with Imagawa.
Nah
