season 1 shot it's load early and the last 4 episodes were filler season 2 kept getting better as it went along

Also my opinion. Season one is a little better overall just cause of mcconaughey and harrelson combo was that great but I really loved the second season as well.

I watched 1 then recently watched 2 and 3. 1 is the best but I think 2 and 3 are worth watching for sure.

True Detective S1 feels like a Zodiac/Se7en retread, however well acted. S2 has it weird quirks like Vince hamming it up and gay cops and the Lynchian dream sequences. But I remember it a lot more

Vince was definitely miscast, would love to had somebody like Michael Shannon to replace him

I'm watching season 3 for the first time, up to episode 7, it's alright. I liked s2 but it didn't feel like the same show as s1. 3 feels closer to 1 while still being it's own thing.

It also has the funniest fricking line in the entire series

    >I'll have some monstrous homies frick him to death in his cell
    >hear me boy?
    >you will bleed black wiener

The only reason this show is good is because the first season felt like what could of been a gem Lovecraft show. Now the promise is gone why the frick would I watch the rest of it?

tbh he got away with not-so-subtly referencing pizzagate. I'm not sure how True Detective didn't get called a Qanon far right conspiracy show.

S1 (Perfect 10) > S2 (8.5/10 kino) > All the rest of the dog shit Pizza lets them make.

This is objectively correct and so self apparent, if you disagree, you are simply too moronic to be educated on it.

Nah, season 1 is in a league of its own.
There's a lot of masterfully done poignancy evoked from its depiction of old, forgotten, broken people, whose entire lives were dictated by tragedies caused by corrupt politicians and faceless corporate entities. And how that corruption seeped into the entire community to the point where it strangled all life and hope out of it. Rust and Marty may as well have been investigative journalists, the way they track down forgotten people to talk about other forgotten people to bring justice and their stories to light.
I've said it before but it reminds me of a few This American Life episodes about old time America.

Season 2 in comparison felt like a typical crime drama. And even though the age-old crime had many twists and turns and was as deeply rooted in the past as the Tuttle cult, it lacked scope and emotional weight, the latter because of the way the sibling subplot was revealed so brusquely without any kind of gradual buildup or unfolding.

I tried to watch episode 3 but the interview format felt obnoxious, like they were trying to manipulate the viewer into feeling for the main character with absolutely nothing to back it up with. They were trying to superficially ape the first season but it felt amateurish in comparison. I've only seen two episodes, I'll try to finish it but it's a slog.

Season 4 actually identifies what made season 1 good, the problem is instead of crafting something that feels similar, they just pig-headedly portray the themes directly as the plot, with no sense of subtlety or artistic technique. So now instead of the refineries looming in the background of every shot of season 1 as a metaphor for the corruption of Tuttle's and the grip their corruption has on the land and its people, the story now involves a literal protest against a mine for leaking chemicals in the water and poisoning people. And of course all the other superficial elements it tries to copy from season 1. As a result everyone just

feels like a one-dimension caricature and there's no texture. The characters don't feel realistic either save for one or two. Best and probably only good character is Hank Prior, because his character has depth and his fatal flaw is relatable.

Danvers on the other hand is a complete cartoon character, nothing about her feels real. Peter Prior's indigenous wife just comes across as moronic for kicking her husband out for his poor work-life balance. Rose Aguineau feels like a cartoon character as well.

They should have probably spent more time fleshing out the characters.
Navarro is ok when she's not pegging Qavvik, because he comes across as a cartoon character whose sole purpose is to be the worried housewife in his and Navarro's husband-wife dynamic. Wow, so progressive.
