It’s a raunchy 2000s dudebro comedy but for artsy girls. Just swap the cast with Jason Biggs, Sean William Scott and Breckin Meyer and you’ll see what I mean.

I thought it was good. But that's it. Great visuals but just good. Barry was great. I told my gf that if a guy had made it it would have been better. Sort of like a poor (wo)mans Talented Mr Ripley.

What I didn’t like about The Talented Mr Ripley is he’s still too likeable even as a psychopath. With Oliver you feel a genuine revulsion to him by the end.

I expected more in general, but I will say that I was surprised by how they handled the mutt cousin.
    >main Chad is genuinely nice
    >has a half-Black person cousin whose mum left to "get away from all the cold Englishmen" so she got bred by some American Black person who then proceeded to take all her money and disappear
    >Chad's dad is the one who funds the mutt cousin
    >mutt cousin doesn't appreciate it, is a c**t to Oli the whole time, acts like a richgay when he's literally dependent on charity, and is honestly a genuinely bad person, while the rest of the family are just aloof and corny richgays
    >Oli does some shit, mutt cousin gets in trouble
    >goes to ask for more money from Chad
    >when he doesn't get his way makes it a "you just hate me cause I'm BLACK, homie, just like your manservants" thing
    >Chad has none of it and shuts him down, cutting off the money to his coalburning druggie mum
Surprisingly Anti-[Current Year]. The film basically attacks Black folk, mutts and coalburners. I don't know what to make of it since it seems antithetical to the type of person who'd make such a film, that's basically an AO3 Dark Triad Fujo Fanfic.

I think this is just one of those instances where a creator just wanted to shoehorn a black guy into a story about a rich white family, and didn’t think too hard about how it all comes across.

I was expecting a swinger mum, coked out parties, experimental drugs, but even the big party is just people hanging out and getting drunk with maybe two couples making out. The whole thing felt very much like a couple of corny rich gays just vibing to Harry Potter and then having some mild sex two times throughout the entire film.

The ending made me wonder how long he was planning this, he had to have asked his parents to enroll in this college for the express purpose of stalking him. Right?
How long has he been doing the "shy nerdy awkward" act?
    Creepy to think about.

      Anonymous

I don’t think so, he lies to his parents about being the top scholar at Oxford and being in plays there. Implying that was his original goal, to be someone important at Oxford. It’s not until he sees Felix there that he decides he wants to be him. He makes “friends” with the maths autist until he can weasel his way into interacting will Felix somehow.

        Anonymous

Yeah but if that was his original goal he wouldn't be putting on his "shy, awkward creepy nerd" act.
You know it's an act because as he gets more comfortable he completely changes his personality to be something more fitting to his environment to get what he needs.
If he wanted to be important at oxford how would you achieve that being a helpless pushover?
Doesn't make sense which leads me to believe he's been planning this for awhile.

I think he genuinely was a creepy nerd, he is not necessarily shy in the beginning. Just lying for sympathy and to get closer to Felix. In the beginning when him are Farley are with the teacher discussing the reading list you can see his true nature slip. He read all 50 books on the reading list including the King James Bible and wants to be the top scholar at Oxford. He seethes at Farley because he didn’t read any of the books but the teacher still prefers him over Oliver.

He was obviously lying about reading the whole list numbnuts, there’s some more grist for the shill mill. Regardless the movie was too convoluted and ultimately shallow for its own good, just like Promising Young Woman.

He’s an obsessive person though that goes to insane lengths for those obsessions. Reading 50 books over a summer break (which I’m assuming is 2-3 months for bongs?) seems believable.

The Alienist isn’t on the Oxford summer reading list you morons, the one book they name check is the King James Bible. Go read that in a day and tell me how much free time you had to eat and sleep and then you can tell me more about how the one thing the shrewd pathological liar was telling the truth about was mistakenly reading his entire summer reading list because he’s that much of an overachieving genius.

Also the “road trip” where Felix drives Oliver back to home town seems to take a few hours. So Oliver and Felix likely didn’t attend the same high school, so it’s unlikely Oliver had ever seen him before.

            Anonymous

They're a rich and influential family, I don't think Oliver would need to see Felix in highschool to know about him or fixate on him.

I think he genuinely was a creepy nerd, he is not necessarily shy in the beginning. Just lying for sympathy and to get closer to Felix. I dunno, I don't buy it. I'm totally convinced what we see initially in the film isn't even his "true self" just a performance to lull people into a false sense of safety and security.
Let's also not forget this dude is jacked and hung as frick. Meaning he should be an outgoing, wienery stud by nature. That's what we see at the end and I'm convinced we only see his true colors as he dances naked.

I just don’t see him not acting upon it earlier if that’s the case, if anything it would be easier to get to Felix when he’s younger and more naive?

the ending literally shows that he planned the whole thing beyond a shadow of a doubt. Did you even pay attention? All sense of mystery and intrigue in regards to the main character is gone as soon as Felix takes him to visit his parents. The whole second half of the movie is boring and predictable. The movie blew its load way too early. The rest is a cringe fest for the sake of it being cringe.

I think what doesn’t translate to yanks is that owning an Estate like that in England can only be possible through inheritance/being born into the family that owns it or marriage..UNLESS you do what Ollie did. The movie explores the third option and from that perspective it’s entertaining.
