1. driving the boat backwards would put you at a disadvantage (slow/easy target and pointing the wrong way so the hatch opens in deep water)

There aren’t machine gunners with effective range in proximity to do what you are suggesting. The pillboxes and whatnot are all 1000 yds+ up the beach. Anyone in no man’s land is getting fricked by artillery and the 500 other boats landing at the same time.
Get off the fricking thing and establish a line of offense is the way better choice.

2) saving private Ryan was inaccurate, the Germans didn’t fire straight down onto the beaches, actually their bunkers looked a lot like your boats. They fired left and right down the beaches and the troops advancing took fire from their sides.

your picture shows no such thing. op made a point about roofs, and in your pic the gun could only hit the nearside exit of any given boat, leaving the other side a safe path for marines to save hte world.

Saving Private Ryan version of Normandy is a fantasy. Americans didn't land on the beach directly in the line of fire. They landed out of sight of the bunkers and then approached.
