there's not much to spoil btw since Miyazaki doesn't really do plot twists or anything like that.

It's crazy how stacked the casts are for these Ghibli dubs.

Ghibli dubs are always the best quality, really some of the only Anime worth watching dubbed instead of subbed.

why the frick is this full of actors if it's an animation? do these tards not realise that their shitty facial expressions don't carry over into anime???

Familiar voices are often used for big voice acting role like this since people recognize it and it gives the film star power. Some recurring ones here definitely, like Christian Bale who did Howl's Moving Castle

What did I think of it?

      Is it good?

I've seen all Miyazaki's movies to date, didn't love all of them, but really enjoyed most of them. Some are pure frickin kino legendary films, and this is definitely one of them.
It's much more psychological than most of his other films, definitely meant for an older audience, though it still keeps that childish charm that even his most serious movies have. I guess it's meant to be rewatched from childhood to adulthood to get a deeper appreciation for the meaning.
I definitely had the hardest time understanding wtf was going on here out of all his movies, mainly due to how metaphor-driven the whole story was. It was also clearly very personal, being apparently an autobiographical fantasy. He seems to have put different parts of his life into several of the characters, mainly the protagonist and the antagonist (revealed more towards the end).
All in all, definitely recommend watching this if you're at all into his films.

i just know this dub will be garbage

The dub was actually excellent, for something this big they definitely invest the time and talent to do it right and it shows.
It's a very visual movie so highly recommend watching it in your native language unless you know Japanese because having to read the subtitles is not worth it.

        >and the antagonist
Are you saying the dub translation portrays Granduncle as an antagonist? Because lmao if so

It doesn't, though he definitely can be depending on how you look at it,
just the closest term for him for those who haven't seen it, since they wouldn't know who the frick Granduncle is.

            >just the closest term for him
Being flat out wrong is hardly the closest term. He's not an antagonist by any means. Hell, the Parakeet King is much more so

The way I interpreted it is being related to the father-son conflict that Miyazaki had with his son, especially over his first film, so an old man who created this fantasy world and wants desperately for his progeny to stay in it and carry on his work, which is why they kidnapped his pregnant aunt. The Parakeet King is just another creation of the world. Miyazaki himself stated that the movie was meant to be his farewell to his grandson, and assuming the boy is supposed to be the grandson, it follows this idea that he was being a selfish fantasy-obsessed dick in his life and now wants his grandson to have his own life his own way in the real world and to escape his legacy.

Not sure though, will definitely have to give it a second viewing once it's officially out.

the NPR critic on the radio today rec'd the opposite but what does he know. in my experience the far too familiar celebrities are more distracting to me good, billy bob thorton sticks out in my memory particularly

Because they like the movies and want to be part of it. Especially Bale.

Because anime/video game voice actors suck ass. Things are even worse now because a generation of new VAs are entering the industry who have grown up with and base their performances off of the frick awful voice acting of old

homie I saw it weeks ago, you're not special

Yeah and Japs saw it months ago. If you dont care then dont reply

How does it compare to the wind rises?

It's similar, both are PG-13 I believe. It's somewhere between Wind Rises, Spirited Away, and Grave of the Fireflies (i know that one is not his film but you'll understand when you watch it)

          >oh. didn't know that burgers are getting it so late compared to euros
Assuming you guys only got it early because they did a theatrical release with subs.
We burgers are moronic and will likely never have another major theatrical release that requires reading subtitles so we had to wait for them to get a bunch of A-listers to do the dub.
Which I'm fine with since it honestly improves the experience.

          >zoomer haircut
