We love Ellie, the short itself is just crude and kinda boring. I mean it's not bad, but at the same time the whole "be kind to nature or it will tentacle rape you OOOOO" is a bit played out.

While we're here I have a proposition:
I think most of us can agree that we had a fun thread, and dicking around with premade assets is a great way for beginners to learn and for veterans to experiment.
I thus propose that, instead shitting a thread onto the board whenever someone feels like it, we have a good-ass royalty-free 3DCG thread every other week or so, in which we meme about with free models and maybe do requests and help out newbies.
The time gap is there so that, apart from preventing the concept from getting too stale, people have ample time to cook up OC and hunt for new assets to theme the threads around.

Look into the basics of modeling, rigging and posing. Understanding some fundamentals helps immensely when trying to figure out what is working and what isn't.
Don't know what the best total noob guide is these days, but I hear good things about BlenderGuru's donut video.
It's honestly good practicvev, something to keep my mind off things, so I'd be down for whatever. I also hope that people feel more encouraged to animate, because it's really not as hard as it seems.

I mean I threw in a couple of renders, but there were evidently multiple anons who knew the basics and could make decent stuff, with other anons eager to learn and enough people on the sidelines to bring a spontaneous thread to bump limit and beyond, so there seems to be a decent amount of interest for something of this nature. I just hope it wasn't just a flash in the pan.
If there are fun themes and we find more characters as appealing (in the channer sense) as Ellie we're at least likely to have a couple of cozy threads as long as they stay afloat long enough to gain traction.
There is an issue in that Ellie is kind of a perfect storm, a free high quality model that people swoon over on sight that also has a dedicated short movie to reference, which will be hard to find elsewhere.
I'd love that. Seeing people who once abandoned Blender get back into it was really nice 🙂

Not that anon, but doing this kinda stuff is like playing around with a puppet, the only hard things are learning to navigate the software. Once you learn how to move and spin shit around (G to move, R to rotate) it's easy, albeit a bit tedious before you get into the grove.
Modeling is another can of worms entirely, a can that takes way too long to open (very rewarding once you do though).

Exactly, posing is usually simple, and if the rig (meaning all the bones you move around) is good it can make the process much simpler. The rig on Ellie's model specifically is pretty beginner friendly, for example if you move the hand it moves the rest of the arm with it, you can trigger the visibility of the bone groups individually so it doesn't look like a mess of lines everywhere. idk if you ever posed a model in Gmod but it's basically the same except you click on the individual bones instead of using the physgun

Nah if I had to do it frame by frame stop-motion style I'd kill myself lol. picrel shows you all the keyframes more or less (the rows highlighted in green), Blender does all the frames inbetween the keys automatically (this is called interpolation), and around the 60 frame mark I just copy paste 'em to make a loop, and change a couple details here and there so it doesn't look too repetitive (that's what I'm gonna be doing tomorrow). I'm still noob-ish in terms of actual animation, so the hardest part by far is timing everything right.

Since 2.79 there's a Stepped Interpolation modifier for F-Curves, accessible from Graph Editor > Modifiers tab > Stepped Interpolation.
Unfortunately you need to create that modifier on every single curve (X, Y, Z, QuatX, QuatY, QuatZ, QuatW, ScaleX, ScaleY, ScaleZ etc.) of every single object that you want the effect on.
It'll be a lot of modifiers, and they aren't instanced so if you adjust a setting in one of them you'll have to use a script to change all the others in the same way...

...actually, scratch that, I just checked the NLA Editor and you can use that same modifer but at the Action strip level (i.e. all the animation of the character). Picrel is a single modifier for the Action strip, which acts on all curves within.

To shorten what that anon said basically all you need to do to animate in blender is create poses (your keyframes) and that's it. For example you make one pose with a fist and one pose with a thumbs up, then Blender will animate the thumb coming up from the fist.
Blender animation has an extremely low skill floor

Do that around a couple hundred times and yup, that's the animation done. Try it for yourself with the default cube. Add a keyframe on frame 1, then move the cube anywhere else, and add another keyframe. Moving cube!! But that's just you moving the whole model around. With a character, you're moving anywhere from 2 to dozens of different body parts for each frame. It's not particularly hard, but it takes time and it takes knowing how the human body moves.

Burger Anon here, spent a few hours on this one, upgraded to cycles rendering, researched on lighting, and finally got the particle hair to work. I think it's a big upgrade to the previous renders.
"What's so cool about this pose? Wait... A-Anon, why are you taking your pants off?"
Pressing "N" to bring up the side panel in your 3D viewport. Under Cloudrig > Character > Particle Hair. Set to 1. Also under "ellie.hair" in the outliner, I had to turn the mesh off and the particles on manually, but you might not have to. I fiddled with the model myself a little to make sure it all displayed correctly.
90 frames at 24fps

I've been making small animation sequence for like 2 years now, and I still don't know what "24fps" means... like... I usually do like 10fps if I want a smooth movement, and 7.5 or 5fps if I want more details than smoothness ... like each frame is what? 0.1 to 0.15 ms ?

Well fps mean frame by second so each 1 second contain 1 frame, so 1 second of a 24 fps means theres 24 seconds in 1 frame of animation

I've been rendering scenes with volumetrics, subdivisions and shit that make even the tough rigs choke up to 20 seconds on an ultrabook from 2011 running a shitty i3 with integrated graphics when it was barely able to open file explorer.
Try not using big subdivision numbes/any subdivisions. >30 frames to get 1 second

Are you rendering on a literal toaster? I'll admit I don't know much about rendering but that seems all kinds of absurd.
The opposite, actually. I built my PC specifically for rendering and CAD.
Earlier it took me about 10 minutes to render a minute long clip of Harley Quinn licking a tentacle, so that should give you an idea of how widely render time can vary.
This model specifically is made by professionals to be used in official promo material, so it takes a substantially longer time to render her since she is fully decked out.

Eevee was supposed to make it much faster to render something with good enough results. It's a semi-real-time renderer, it would be perfect for this NPR-style Ellie. Picrel is some of what people rendered with Eevee.
Before the short? No way. She's locked up tighter than Fort Knox.
After the short? Who knows, she's probably going through a lot of mental trauma, and she might start trying different outlets.

I think most of us can agree that we had a fun thread, and dicking around with premade assets is a great way for beginners to learn and for veterans to experiment.
I thus propose that, instead shitting a thread onto the board whenever someone feels like it, we have a good-ass royalty-free 3DCG thread every other week or so, in which we meme about with free models and maybe do requests and help out newbies.
The time gap is there so that, apart from preventing the concept from getting too stale, people have ample time to cook up OC and hunt for new assets to theme the threads around.

I mean I threw in a couple of renders, but there were evidently multiple anons who knew the basics and could make decent stuff, with other anons eager to learn and enough people on the sidelines to bring a spontaneous thread to bump limit and beyond, so there seems to be a decent amount of interest for something of this nature. I just hope it wasn't just a flash in the pan.
If there are fun themes and we find more characters as appealing (in the channer sense) as Ellie we're at least likely to have a couple of cozy threads as long as they stay afloat long enough to gain traction.

Not that anon, but doing this kinda stuff is like playing around with a puppet, the only hard things are learning to navigate the software. Once you learn how to move and spin shit around (G to move, R to rotate) it's easy, albeit a bit tedious before you get into the grove.
Modeling is another can of worms entirely, a can that takes way too long to open (very rewarding once you do though).

Exactly, posing is usually simple, and if the rig (meaning all the bones you move around) is good it can make the process much simpler. The rig on Ellie's model specifically is pretty beginner friendly, for example if you move the hand it moves the rest of the arm with it, you can trigger the visibility of the bone groups individually so it doesn't look like a mess of lines everywhere. idk if you ever posed a model in Gmod but it's basically the same except you click on the individual bones instead of using the physgun

Nah if I had to do it frame by frame stop-motion style I'd kill myself lol. picrel shows you all the keyframes more or less (the rows highlighted in green), Blender does all the frames inbetween the keys automatically (this is called interpolation), and around the 60 frame mark I just copy paste 'em to make a loop, and change a couple details here and there so it doesn't look too repetitive (that's what I'm gonna be doing tomorrow). I'm still noob-ish in terms of actual animation, so the hardest part by far is timing everything right.
Since 2.79 there's a Stepped Interpolation modifier for F-Curves, accessible from Graph Editor > Modifiers tab > Stepped Interpolation.
Unfortunately you need to create that modifier on every single curve (X, Y, Z, QuatX, QuatY, QuatZ, QuatW, ScaleX, ScaleY, ScaleZ etc.) of every single object that you want the effect on.
It'll be a lot of modifiers, and they aren't instanced so if you adjust a setting in one of them you'll have to use a script to change all the others in the same way...
...actually, scratch that, I just checked the NLA Editor and you can use that same modifer but at the Action strip level (i.e. all the animation of the character). Picrel is a single modifier for the Action strip, which acts on all curves within.
So that reduces a lot on the number of modifiers you'll need, heh

To shorten what that anon said basically all you need to do to animate in blender is create poses (your keyframes) and that's it. For example you make one pose with a fist and one pose with a thumbs up, then Blender will animate the thumb coming up from the fist.
Blender animation has an extremely low skill floor
Do that around a couple hundred times and yup, that's the animation done. Try it for yourself with the default cube. Add a keyframe on frame 1, then move the cube anywhere else, and add another keyframe. Moving cube!! But that's just you moving the whole model around. With a character, you're moving anywhere from 2 to dozens of different body parts for each frame. It's not particularly hard, but it takes time and it takes knowing how the human body moves.

Burger Anon here, spent a few hours on this one, upgraded to cycles rendering, researched on lighting, and finally got the particle hair to work. I think it's a big upgrade to the previous renders.

How'd you get the particle hair to work?
Pressing "N" to bring up the side panel in your 3D viewport. Under Cloudrig > Character > Particle Hair. Set to 1. Also under "ellie.hair" in the outliner, I had to turn the mesh off and the particles on manually, but you might not have to. I fiddled with the model myself a little to make sure it all displayed correctly.
Where can you find her other facial expressions like her being sad, scared and excited?

I've been rendering scenes with volumetrics, subdivisions and shit that make even the tough rigs choke up to 20 seconds on an ultrabook from 2011 running a shitty i3 with integrated graphics when it was barely able to open file explorer.

Earlier it took me about 10 minutes to render a minute long clip of Harley Quinn licking a tentacle, so that should give you an idea of how widely render time can vary.
This model specifically is made by professionals to be used in official promo material, so it takes a substantially longer time to render her since she is fully decked out.

Are you rendering on a literal toaster? I'll admit I don't know much about rendering but that seems all kinds of absurd.
Not that anon, but the whole rendering process can vary greatly. Having good specs aint gonna do shit if you're rendering at like 2000+ samples in Cycles (which is the raytracing renderer Blender uses), that's always gonna take time. There's other settings that factor into the time it takes to render, but yeah, it always eats up time. That's why in my case I drop the samples way down to like 256. You could render it in Eevee since that works in real time, kinda like a game engine, and it'll take you way way less time, but you've gotta set everything up (materials, lights, all that stuff) to look good in Eevee from the get-go so it doesn't look like a cheap PS2 game. Cycles just looks good most of the time, without much intervention, it's great for external models like these, and since all you have to do is click and wait, rendering in Cycles just makes sense.

Eevee was supposed to make it much faster to render something with good enough results. It's a semi-real-time renderer, it would be perfect for this NPR-style Ellie. Picrel is some of what people rendered with Eevee.
