This. I remember people being excited for Star wars, but dissapoinment in the prequels was pretty widespread. Dennis Miller criticized them on weekend update at one point I think.
Howard stern was one of the first people to see TPM, and he went on the air saying it sucked, and he got attacked from just about every angle, lucasfilm attacked him saying he wasn't allowed to criticize it, fans were pissed because star wars was impossible of being bad. Then of course everyone saw the movie and called in apologizing, and for weeks they just talked about how bad it was.
I actually saw it in the theater in 1999 when I was 17 and I remember how I was excited to see new Star Wars but then about 5 minutes into it I started to slowly realize... "wait... wait, this sucks... it's gonna get better right? oh shit... no, this still sucks... oh shit, this movie is terrible..." So I think that the whole "RLM made people hate the prequels meme" is ridiculous. Those movies were widely criticized and mocked when they came out.
It made local news fresh off opening weekend. The Plinkett reviews just felt like a nostalgic retrospective of what was considered one of the biggest disappointments in cinematic history. A low hanging fruit.
See this is how I felt as well. The Plinkett reviews just treaded territory we already knew at this point. Never knew this was people's first exposure to SW criticism considering I remember people jerking off stuff like KOTOR as "WHAT THE PREQUELS SHOULD'VE BEEN"
I remember as a kid seeing the news accuse Jar Jar of being racist and being confused since I had watched the behind the scenes and he was played by a black guy. How could a character played by a black guy be racist?
Well, Jar Jar is well-meaning, kind hearted and ultimately gathers his courage to fight for the common good. I guess Black folk aren't like him after all.
>Jar-Jar Binks pulled off the improbable feat of offending three social groups who for many years have endured society's intolerance: blacks, gays and Star Wars geeks. >gays
lol wut? How the frick? Is there some weird gay stereotype that MAD magazine was aware of?
With the rewatch of the OT movies, Jedi has maybe a 20 minute stretch where it's a little bad, but the rest of the movie is kino. All the Luke and Emperor stuff is the height of the series.
The funny thing about this image (which is from reddit btw) is that a literal moron who made it clearly doesn't understand the quote he'a used for le smart people bracket. So people posting this usually BTFO themselves by default. Lol
i swear to god the only explanation for all the prequel shilling is that there must be thousands of acres worth of prequel merch still sitting in warehouses, so they're paying influencers hard to try to redeem the shit movies to try to get this merch moving again.
Prequel wank happened with the Sequels. Not defending them, but I think people looked back at the "ideas" of the prequels as thematically more interesting, but at the end of the day they're still poorly directed, poorly acted movies with bad dialogue that fumbled what could've been a great story.
All the stupid shit in the prequels like the inane politics, clean sterile atmosphere, and nonsense aliens just makes normal peoples eyes glaze over. They don't care and are bored and annoyed.
Disney movies had their flaws due to a lack of coordination but they knew what they were and knew how to appeal to actual people.
Star Wars are fun, stupid, little adventure movies based around deliberately corny melodrama, low budget antics, and goofy humor. It's not some sprawling epic and nobody ever wanted it as a "franchise".
RLM was right and it's why TLJ is the best because it was self-aware enough to understand what star wars is and point it out to the audience. It's literally taking what the prequel spergs fanatically argued about 24/7 on their weird incel messageboards and having a laugh at it, because star wars isn't meant to be taken seriously.
Incels can REEEE about the sequels all day but Disney was just cleaning up the mess of the prequels.
>boomers used to read this tripe
>Dissing MAD
Yikes.
>zoomers forced to cope with the reality that RLM didn't invent criticizing their favorite kids movies
lol

I remember someone made a rap song about murdering jar jar lmao

Do people actually think RLM created the "Prequels are bad" narrative? I remember this insanely being a thing even in 2004.
It made local news fresh off opening weekend. The Plinkett reviews just felt like a nostalgic retrospective of what was considered one of the biggest disappointments in cinematic history. A low hanging fruit.

>Do people actually think RLM created the "Prequels are bad" narrative?
i wouldn't classify zoomers as "people"
MAD mocks everything, The Godfather, Titanic, etc. Every big movie has been mocked, so this doesn't prove anything.
Did any of the characters in those other big movies get the kind of treatment like in picrel?
Sure. I feel that MAD often mocks the good blockbuster movies more than the bad.
But I wonder if they mocked Schindlers List.
Rent free
>zoomer salty he didn't grow up with MAD
No wonder your sense of humour is terrible
>more irritating than the ewoks
Gen xers are souless
And zoomers are brainless, more news at 11
Imagine disliking the ewoks. Gen xers dislike everything that made Star Wars pure and soulful.
Of course. And this movie is a 10/10 groundbreaking masterpiece. I know you haven't seen it, just trust me. Only Holidays Special tops it.
I remember as a kid seeing the news accuse Jar Jar of being racist and being confused since I had watched the behind the scenes and he was played by a black guy. How could a character played by a black guy be racist?
I remember right now when you were full of shit and mentally moronic, anon.
Reminder that anyone who claims that Jar-Jar was a racist character perceives Black folk as being like Jar-Jar.
Well, Jar Jar is well-meaning, kind hearted and ultimately gathers his courage to fight for the common good. I guess Black folk aren't like him after all.
>jar jar hated by boomers
>Hated by sjws for his accent and racial undertones
Why am i supposed to hate him again?
Because he represents the cynical infantilization of Star Wars that began in the 80s with the Ewoks and continued into the 00s with TCW and Ahsoka.
Dont care, sill the best star wars movie
>best star wars movie
Wrong pic, anon
>Jar-Jar Binks pulled off the improbable feat of offending three social groups who for many years have endured society's intolerance: blacks, gays and Star Wars geeks.
>gays
lol wut? How the frick? Is there some weird gay stereotype that MAD magazine was aware of?
i think they're just slyly calling him a homosexual.
He talked like a gay and his shit was all moronic.
With the rewatch of the OT movies, Jedi has maybe a 20 minute stretch where it's a little bad, but the rest of the movie is kino. All the Luke and Emperor stuff is the height of the series.
Agreed. The ewok shit got kinda dumb and went on too long but the throne room was absolute kino
Ewoks are underrated. Some of the choreography was goofy and undermined their scenes, but the idea was fine.

Its not from reddit i can assure you. And how does the OP not "understand the quote"?
>OP
lurk more zoomie
How does the original poster of that image not het the quote? can you not answer the question moron?
The ewoks are the least of RotJ's problems.
I like how the smart people quote doesn't even mention ROTJ, clearly the smartest move is to not watch it in the first place.
offending gays?

Best of the sequels, maybe. Nothing else.
Jar Jar has some nice feet.
