One of the worst actors ever. I never look at DDL and see the character he is playing. I also see DDL hamming it up, showing off his heckin epic acting.

I think people used to be impressed by it but now everyone realizes it means the actor has a massive ego and a hugely inflated sense of importance. Even more so than regular actors.

Incredible actor in an incredible movie by an incredible director.
The soundtrack did most of the emotional heavy-lifting.
He was made to realize and acknowledge his own mistakes infront of others. Something he would've never done on his own. As weak as the preacher was, and all his faults aside, he was able to teach him a lesson that stuck for the rest of his life. He showed him that family is what matters above business right there. Maybe DDL's character had never felt his own inner pain. This was a good movie.
The reason it's considered good acting is because it was a bit over-the-top but believable at the time, but later in the movie you learn that the character was faking it, which retroactively makes the veneer of deception make perfect sense is you realize it was a perfectly calibrated performance.
