Sean Murphy is like one of the worst fricking writers I’ve ever had the misfortune of reading from how the hell did DC give him his own universe to frick around with?

He earned it, if it was through hard job or blowjobs don't know tho
>writes and draws his own comic with its own continuity
>critical and commercial success
>gets to do more and they're all well received
I don't see the problem.
You could use those bottom two points about Bendis as well. Superhero comics are probably the worst place to use that argument.
Bendis used to draw, even.
Actually Bendis has really fallen as a creator. His stuff doesn't sell as well as it used to. Remember that his big DC contract backfired as he wasn't pulling in the same numbers as when he was really popular.
>You could use those bottom two points about Bendis as well.
Well yeah
Bendis on USM: People liked him (mostly)
Bendis on main continuity (most of the time): People didn't like him
Plenty of people liked USM, Alias, Daredevil, and early New Avengers.
The larger comic community didn't start complaining till around Dark Reign, and he still stayed on Avengers for years after.
Dark Reign was fine but Siege and Heroic Age were when things went South for him.
Disassembled and New Avengers was when more complaints started
The problem is that his time on Avengers is kind of distorted because they were really going all-out on making it sell--top popular artists, variant covers, Spider-Man and Wolverine on the team, mystery subplots
And then there was the hype over civil war to Secret Invasion, so the events helped carry the book further
Dark Reign is probably Bendis' best on Avengers but if you look at the sales, there was a major decline during that time
there are like 3 good or decent writers at DC what do you expect
DC likes to throw a bone at certain artists by pretending they can write. This happened with Tony Daniel and David Finch before too.
I'd love to support more writer-artists but holy shit so many comic ones are fricking awful.
It also appeals to the crowd that loves Batman but only know the movies/Arkham games/ 30 year old half-recalled memories of BTAS
With David Finch I could at least bust a nut to White Rabbit
Daniel and Finch at least first became known for writing and drawing their own comics so there was a precedent for it before they got to DC
Murphy like Daniel got the Morrison boost with Joe the Barbarian and other books like American Vampire
I imagine people read his books because of all the fanservice he crams in. The straw that broke the camel's back for me with the first one was when Joker went back to being crazy for a minute and his skin and hair changed colour, as if those pills had changed his appearance as well as his mind. I just assumed he had worn makeup and dyed his hair to get rid of his Joker look. I know you need to suspend your disbelief, but that's a bit much.
I stopped enjoying it when it became 100% jack napier/tumblrman. His joker is neat and fun, but eventually it stops being about Joker and is just about Jack Napier, who is effectively a different character. Not very interesting. His daughter Jackie is cute tho.
He's just as bad as every single other current DC comics writer
Believe it or not, enough normies ate up White Knight's trite premise to make it successful. I have no idea how the hell it's still selling afterwards, though.
Bad Batman comics are often popular with the normies, see Hush or Court of Owls.
The Scott Snyder Court of Owls arc wasn't bad.
All the tie-ins for the Night of Owls event were terrible, but Court of Owls itself was fine.
He wrote a comic called Punk Rock Jesus where a clone of Jesus becomes an atheist and hangs out with the actual Carl Sagan and for some reason the IRA is also there despite the fact that Murphy’s Irish in name only
Best of all, they managed to get the Robins' order wrong.
I see people defend it so much, its so fricking stupid. Batman's first robin "dying" is such an awful precedence.
