The main characters need a superpower that distinguishes them from the regular people. Being a Coordinator alone doesn't accomplish that since an entire faction is made up of Coordinators.

People bash on Zeta, but the fricking characters are moronic as frick and the politics are summed up as "le RACISM is the cause of all evil" and the self-insert of Orb being neutral Japan is just ad bad.
The only good things from Cosmic Era is Astray and Stargazer.

No, serious anons outside of m have bashed Zeta. Go look up archives of Gundam boards and other places. There's a lot of valid criticism how all over the place the plot pacing was and the cluster frick of the Titans-Axis-AEUG squabble.
That being said, I still enjoyed Zeta (series and the new movies) way more than I ever could for SEED and Destiny. Fukuda and Morosawa did such a shit job that it baffles me how popular this crap is.

One writer came up with the concept of the show, then handed it off to another writer who wrote the actual plot.
"SEED mode" got completely forgotten in the story until the one and only time it's mentioned halfway through the show and during a recap episode. "Superior Evolutionary Element Destined" is mentioned exactly one time in the show and never brought up again. That's because the second writer went full-tilt on the natural vs coordinator angle for the main characters and only added the newtype thing to Mwu and Rau as a nod to the franchise. "SEED mode" is literally nothing other than a visual cue for "shit just got real".
