Having a sense of humor doesn't make something a comedy. The Conan series, the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories, and The First Law books all have a sense of humor, but are serious fantasy adventure stories rather than comedies.

I'm not even a big fan of Golden Axe but this sounds like a disaster. Considering that this is a comedy and what Titmouse has worked on lately, the art style will look like cheap garbage. A Golden Axe animation would be better suited as a one off video filled with heavy metal, ass kicking, and eye candy. Maybe have a reference to this ending if you really want some humor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1ZTzltMjKo

It’s so funny, like they get close to what people want then add on “comedy” and it’s a shitty Family Guy ripoff
The Simpsons sincerely destroyed western animation permanently. Every animation for adults just tries to be The Simpsons and when people want more serious fare they don’t know how to respond, nor want to. I think how good or bad it could be will be determined entirely by how the end product looks. Mike McMahan shows all have a Rick and Morty art style, and it would be a bummer if they end up looking like that.
But if they make it a legit cool action show that just happens to be a comedy, then that's alright. Titmouse has worked on Vox Machina, which also had a lot of comedic moments in between serious action. So just a goofier version of that with Golden Axe could be really cool.

It's a very standard beat em up. The only notable deviation from the Final Fight/Streets of Rage formula is that occasionally there's mounts. So basically if you played Captain Commando, same thing.

        Anonymous

Yeah it’s the same sort of game. There’s “3D” movement instead of Dragon’s Crown’s 2d movement but it lacks the cool verticality and fluidity that Crown has. Only real pickups are mounts, mana, and food. Overall I think the closest game to Golden Axe is probably Castle Crashers.

Thin source material is precisely the reason. It gives a recognizable name (granted, not one which has been relevant in many years, but it's still something which will draw in some older gamer viewers and retrogaming youngsters), character designs, a setting, a general plot, and some specific events to serve as starting points, but the whole thing is thin enough that they can still have a number of generic adult comedy plots.

I just realized this will be Comedy Central which is objectively worse than CN because at least on AS it might be memorable. CC only known for South Park which is totally out of their hands they don’t tell Trey or Matt anything on how to ran their series. All their other animated productions were basically Brickleberry tier. Ugly animation edgy and cringey unfunny jokes. Were Sega so out of money after the Sonic movies they had to sell off their properties now?

Sega for a number of years was own by Paramount, they then sold them off to CSK Corporation (now known as SCSK Corporation) in 1984 due to the video game crash of 1983.
It's likely that Paramount after whoever ends up buying them (say Skydance or NBC Universal) wants SegaSammy back.

why would a comedy series starring conan-ripoffs be a source of dread?

        Anonymous

Because the source material, what anon likes, is serious epic fantasy, not comedy. The dread is because hollywood writers will make it a comedy at the expense of the original tone and will disrespect the characters, which will understandably upset genuine fans. Hollywood writers are disgusting and awful and only exist to shit on everything normal people love.

Oh god the character descriptions make this sound like absolute ass.
    > Matthew Rhys will play Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder.

    >Danny Pudi will play Hampton Squib, a naive, inexperienced first time adventurer who has dreamt of questing his entire life. He hopes his can-do attitude can make up for his inability to actually do stuff.
    >Lisa Gilroy will play Tyris Flare, a fearsome battle sorceress, deadly in a fight and even deadlier with her sharp wit.

    >Liam McIntyre will play Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honor and sweet golden retriever demeanor. His brawn outweighs his brains, but his heart outweighs his brawn.

    >Carl Tart will play Chronos “Evil” Lait, originally from “Golden Axe III”, is a 100% badass humanoid panther. At least that’s how Chronos describes himself. In reality he’s uncomfortably cheesy and can’t read a room.

Like they're not even mentioning the fact that Chronos is beastman because he got cursed by the Golden Axe. In fact inclusion of Hampton at all when they're willing to use player characters besides the original trio is strange. Honestly I want to know more about their ideas for the story if there even is one, Golden Axe has some weird lore and stories outside the first game.

I would have loved a serious Sword and Sorcery animated series of Golden Axe.

      Anonymous

The entertainment industry seems to have a negative attitude towards Sword and Sorcery these days. I think the reason is because several Hollywood S&S movies failed in the 2010s. The Conan movie, Seventh Son, and a few other scattered low fantasy movies here and there all underperformed. John Carter, in the closely related Sword and Planet genre, also bombed disastrously. The Scorpion King series degenerated into cheap direct to video trash immediately after the first movie. Hollywood will probably continue to take occasional stabs at serious S&S two or three times per decade until something works, then it'll be trendy again for a bit and some good S&S cartoons and videogames will come out. For now though it's a dead genre.

Vox Machina was ultimately only a minor hit though that may have to do with it being on Amazon Prime. Castlevania was a much bigger hit but ultimately ate itself alive when the woker changes and poorer writing later on started to get the audience to argue and eventually peter out.

        >John Carter
That mostly failed because Disney decided to go all in on buying out other franchises and ignoring inhouse shit. That led to them pulling a Treasure Planet and giving the movie no advertisement and no PR to help quell the false rumors surrounding the movie. And of course this worked out for Disney as Marvel was a huge hit and Stars Wars made bank even if they crashed and burned the franchise. But you know what negative ramifications John Carter flopping did have? That's right all those phoned-in live action movies, all because of John Carter losing over 200 mil.

Hollywood believes audiences won't want to see a movie unless it has brand name recognition. The poorly conceived "Come see the ancient rough draft of your favorite modern sci-fi franchises" marketing for John Carter was their awkward attempt to trick people into thinking Barsoom is a property they were, or should be, already familiar with.
