I expect him to play a much smaller role or get killed off in whatever film he appears next so they don't have to deal with the awkwardness of the recast. You can't just hand wave him away when you've been building him up though.

These are just assumptions I have. He might've been under the impression he'll play a clear cut hero but in reality he would also need to play a villain.
So far, I don't think any actors have done it simultaneously. Even Tom Hardy's Venom was sort of an anti-hero and the symbiote was never outright evil like the Void, who is the polar opposite of what Superman/Sentry normally is.
It's 3 characters if you count regular Robert. So the actor needs to be able to play a downbeat nutjob, Superman type and demonic entity at the flick of a switch.

Initially yes, but Sentry gave Hulk a piece of his "essence" so he wouldn't be afraid of the Void if he showed up.
Sentry was the only person who could calm the Hulk. Sentry is also a walking schizo and his power level depends on his mental state. Putting him to fight the Thunderbolts doesn't make sense bevause he is literally Molecule Man tier.

Norman Osborn getting to run shield and have his own team of villain avengers was the best thing marvel did in years and just having it just return to status quo was the biggest disappointment.

As far as "superman but evil" concepts go, mental illness makes more sense than Superman himself, who is supposed to be infallible, becoming evil for whatever reason.
Anything short of brainwashing should not make Kal El evil. But Robert Reynolds has the schizo excuse and never even wanted to have these powers. He basically drank a serum that he thought was a drug (since he was a junkie) and it made him Superman.
Idk if it was retconned, but I liked Sentry's backstory. Apparently, he was a Golden Age hero and fought alongside the Avengers, F4, X-Men. But was 100% erased from the world's conscious, like he never existed.
