Is it finally time for Cinemaphile to admit they were wrong about Rob Liefeld?

It's long past being time, but Cinemaphile will continue to be filtered by Rob Liefeld forevermore, and we will be forced to treat foot fetishists like as if they have valid opinions on 90s comic art.

Despite most modern cape comics looking objectively worse, no current artist will ever trigger as many grown men who should know better than Rob Liefeld will.

How did Liefield produce AI slop before AI image generation was possible?

He is objectively a shitty artist and "muh style" is no excuse for shit anatomy when you lack the ability to draw something anatomically correct even if you wanted too. He also can't draw guns worth a shit either.

The funny thing is someone eventually found the bodybuilder picture that image was traced from.

Do people really hate Liefeld this much?

      Anonymous

People who were too old for superhero comics back when Rob Liefeld first broke into the industry hated him and the other Image artists for their styles, for creating a generation of artists who drew like them, and for popularizing action-heavy books with a lot of splash pages and not a lot of plot. A lot of those old guys are still around and still screeching about how Rob Liefeld or Jim Lee is literally the Devil and ruined Marvel then the entire industry.

There are a lot of younger readers who weren't even around in the 90s when Liefeld was big, but just unquestioningly embraced the meme of him being "the worst comic artist of all time" because all those oldgays said it so it must be true.

What do these fools have against Jim Lee?!

          >What do these fools have against Jim Lee?!
In Jim Lee's case a lot of it seems to be less about his art and more Chris Claremont's cult of personality blaming Lee for Claremont leaving X-Men years after he probably should have left anyway, and Magneto simps and apologists hating Lee for turning him back into a villain.

A lot of DC fans are blaming him for most of what's happened to them from New 52 onwards, and a significant amount of that does at least seem to be deserved.

Jim Lee's redesigns for The New 52 feel so overly detailed and dated even for the time, DC wanted to breath new energy into DC only for it to feel like it's 1997.

There were a lot of 90s guys involved early in the New 52, and that may have been appealing to some of us who liked 90s comics, but most of what they were doing wasn't going to fly with younger readers in the 2010s with no 90s nostalgia, it wasn't going to bring in a new generation of readers, and most of Lee's redesigns for the big characters were objective downgrades. There are some costumes you just can't improve with tweaks and adjustments, you either just stick with the classic, or do something that's radically different and see if people like it.

It's funny too when Batman had a solid modern redesign in Batman Inc right before New 52 that actually felt like classic and modern without being an overly detailed mess.

Jim Lee is the second best artist of the Image crew(Silvestri arguably is the best), but one of the worst costume designers. Yes, his X-men are really cool. Those are like his one good set of designs. Unironically, Liefeld was a better designer.

                Anonymous

Jim Lee's 1991 X-Men relaunch was his peak period of costume design, from the X-Men themselves to Omega Red and the Acolytes' uniform, you can arguably include Sabretooth's new costume and Maverick in early 92. Some of the WildCATs costumes are solid designs, I'm not sure how many of the Stormwatch and Gen 13 characters he designed, but few of them were really on the same level.

Most of Liefeld's designs are very much of their era, but he did produce a lot more memorable costumes, some of which have even stood the test of time.

A lot (not all but most) of the really old school comic artists drew from life/anatomy books.
Rob (and Lee) learned to draw from comic books.
It led to them both being very limited artists.
Lee gets a lot of unearned respect, but he's simply a good line artist with a work ethic. His stuff totally lacks imagination. McFarlane is another artist from that era with massive limitations.

Liefeld hate online is worse and more annoying than any of his artwork tbh. I've never cared for Liefeld style (which he choices to drawn in but doesn't have to) but like I can see the appeal, his work is always interesting looking and he pretty creative with how he lays out pages, I can't hate the guy he's just another comic artist to me. Oh but his anatomy is bad or blah blah, it's a comic book it's a form of cartooning his stuff just more detailed version of cartooning.

      >People hate Humberto Ramos art when it was actually unique an cartoony in the late 90's/00's
      >People like his art when it got more standard and bland shit in the 2010's
      >Remember comic fans shitting on Sam Keith art on comic reading website and Ted McKeever's too.
Comic fans want most boring bland shit imaginable it's why people like Gary Frank who yes is a good artist but God his shit so bland, he like soulless Dave Gibbons.

Good cartooning has some sort of internal anatomy and consistency. The problem with Liefeld's art isn't just that it's terrible anatomy, but it's terrible anatomy due to a lack of skill and done without intention. Compare it to one of his contemporaries like Mignola who draws even less realistic human forms yet his style is far more consistent and purposeful.
