How so? I have a hard time remembering what's happened, all my memory got filled by that episode with dead people, i almoust tried to kill myself once and happened to watch it right after, oh boy.

The attitude he held in regards to doing what makes you happy all the time, reflected in the quote here of "keeping yourself busy with unimportant nonsense", is why he is left with almost nothing stable or long term. He's almost like a child in a way, which is why all of his wives end up outgrowing and leaving him.
In a way, he is the other side of the Bojack coin, filling yourself for years on meaningless nothings, except he does with a positive and uplifting disposition.

why was it fine when “adult” cartoons did this to religious people for two decades but it’s not okay when the opposite is done? can we move past this phase of pilpul where everyone pretends to have standards and isn’t just seething that some piece of media criticised their views in the same way they do everyone else’s

      Anonymous

I guess the difference is that nihilism has never been relevant and it's not an organised movement that ever took power in any society. It's like, who cares? You don't see anyone being this invested in BTFOing jainists or manichaeans.

That's a large part of why even if this was truly about nihilism the comparison doesn't work. It's like how people try to be "muh both sides" and gays and anti-gays when kids don't get kicked out of their house for being straight in pro-gay households.

Most of the people who laughed at anti-christian humor also laugh at anti-butthole humor. We've had threads of this because it's good bait, not because it comes from genuine opinions held by enough people for this to be indicative of anything.

You're making way too many assumptions, you don't have to believe in a philophy to know about it or think it's being depicted and propagandized against.

        Anonymous

I think maybe this isn't propaganda and perhaps just a joke. Propaganda tends to be state run and funded in favor of the ruling party, the state itself or against dissent towards that party or state.

          Anonymous

I think it's a joke too, but what I posted was still correct. The assumption of "you got mad because it called you out" is dumb when there are plenty of autistic people to get mad about it.

          >Propaganda tends to be state run and funded in favor of the ruling party,
That's the stereotype you're comfortable with because it compartmentalizes propaganda as a function of power and shields dissenting voices from the shallow criticism of "that's just propaganda". Propaganda can come from anywhere.

            Anonymous

Calling something propaganda does seem a shallow criticism. Though I think that's because it can be used to define a very wide berth of speech.

              Anonymous

It's because it's just biased information meant to change someone's mind on something and is often misleading. It does cover a lot of ground to the point of it being moot beyond the accusation that the information comes from a place of bias and it is misleading, but it's fiction so any topic can be seen as propaganda. That doesn't make it a valid feeling, it's okay to feel "attacked", there just needs to be more said than "it's propaganda" as if you'd also take issue with every instance of propaganda with equal attention, there isn't a particular bit of aggrievement you don't want to address.

I mean that Christianity has a bigger impact on US politics and how people here vote. With that cultural influence and relevance, it's brought up for more than just "something bad someone did some time ago".

  26. 9 months ago

This was making fun of hyper cynical pessimists who justify their shitty self refuting world views using nihilism.
The majority of westerners are moral nihilists (including my self) but most of find things to enjoy in life and aren't bothered by a lack of greater purpose.

A lot people now are overly cynical and try to lecture others about how everything is terrible and the world is shit but when you try to argue with people like this they shoot back with le moral nihilism and social constructionism.
This leads most normal nihilists (most people) to frick off and leave cynical morons in their pulpits to lecture others with their irrefutable condemnation of the world.
