I saw an interesting concept for a fic where instead of going to Kiyoshi island to ride a the Unagi, thr gaang knsteas goes to the travrling circus. In the course of hiding their identities, Aang and Katara learn early not all fire nation citizens are evil or even (privately) support the war. Meanwhile Sokka makes fun of Ty Lee for her chakra stuff and being super girly, gets his ass beat like canon, and learns from his mistakes and gets a kiss. Zuko doesn't burn down the circus, but we get an early hint at his home life when Ty Lee runs into him while the sympathizers smuggle the gaang out.
This leads to latter on Ty Lee's recruitment where she's afraid that Azula will kill her if the latter finds out the former helped the Avatar, providing an on going cat-and-mouse game between them. Sokka is hurt the next time they see each other, and also adds to their maturity as it comes to a false climax in the fall of Ba Sing Se. When they see each other again in the Boiling Rock, Ty Lee chooses love over fear, and escapes like Suki did when Mai distracts Azula for her friend and Zuko.
