They experimented on their own people, chopping up and haphazardly sticking them back together in the name of science and petty revenge for a problem they themselves created by being an entire race of genocidal invaders. The comparison is apt, and they got off scott-free.

It peaked at season 2 unfortunately. The human episodes ruined a otherwise decent sci-fi premise

It's weird. It's basically a long series of icarus flights. They have a good idea, it works at first, then they stretch it too far. Over and over and over.
I like the show for it's highs but its lows get REALLY low. Also it suffers from the tonal schizophrenia that a lot of these "kids cartoon with adult themes" shows do.
Not to mention, much of its good parts were because of the absolute expert buildup and foreshadowing of the first few seasons, that feeling of there are being dots to connect and those things actually being proven right and more serious than you could possibly thing which are trite now, like the gems being aliens, diamonds existing, the corruption, etc. but revealed in sequence they were HUGE reveals and painting very bleak and oppressive tone that made Steven's optimism pop even more. Like the Ocean & Mirror Gem is literally a horror story, about a prisoner getting used to power equipment by the "good guys" and it seemed that Garnet is genuinely mad about Steven using it and asking questions about it. It was absolutely insane back then, because you had no idea what crazy twist would get revealed/confirmed next. The writers were really fricking good at holding themselves back and not popping their big loads right away.
Then of course, with the shitty pacing, executive meddling and just a general biting more than they could chew with their talent, it fell off a fricking cliff and its difficult to convey to modern viewers who can shotgun the whole thing and already know these concepts how alien and oppressive it was, how much of a looming, cryptic menace the Gempire was, treated with such respect in and out of universe that a single maintenance wagie and a single foot soldier of it were huge, credible threats.

Hugely because of its pacing. 12 minute episodes fricking sucked in setting up a premise and carrying it through without a rush. Just look how much better the double length Bismuth episode flows.
Also, the release of the episodes was beyond fricked, it was incomprehensible how could anyone think those hiatuses and stevenbombs instead of a simple episode a week format was better
