        >1 $billion budget
        >only had a 37 percent US completion rate (customers who watched the entire series). Overseas, it reached 45 percent. (A 50 percent completion rate would be a solid but not spectacular result). The show has not been a major awards contender, either, overlooked by the major guilds with the exception of one SAG-AFTRA nomination for stunt ensemble.

Theres plenty of darkness in Tolkiens works, though it isn't really edgy. Morgoth curses Hurin's bloodline and makes him watch as his son fricks up everything, including his sister. Feanors sons do terrible things because of the oath they swore etc.

        Anonymous

When people use the term "dark and edgy" they don't mean that the story is depressing, they're talking about desaturated colors and making the characters moody c**ts.

        Anonymous

The difference is Tolkien doesn't revel in it and show you all the different ways orcs raped their prisoners or whatever. It's a dark world but one with an inextinguishable spark of hope and goodness that will ultimately prevail.

        Anonymous

You're describing tragedy which sees good and noble people suffer the consequences of their dire mistakes, conveying a moral code of ethics to the audience. When modern writers/showrunners say "dark and edgy" they mean morally grey people suffering the actions of other morally grey people, it's cynical and sadistic where tragedy isn't

        Anonymous

Even Tolkien's tone has always had a tinge of tragedy to it. With each age, the world gets a little less magical, and even the elves find themselves fighting for one they know longer have a place in once Sauron is defeated (and they know it). Even the lighter The Hobbit features a good chunk of the characters dead and Bilbo forever changed by his experiences.

The only part of Rings of Power I enjoyed was when the orc stabbed the young female villager. Just the look of pain and horror on her face as she realized it was over for her and she sank helpelssly to the floor. They killed her for no reason just to make a point. Nubile fertile young females being killed and their lives and fertile wombs easted pointlessly makes me rock hard. Not even being edgy, just something about the misery of it my brain copes with by getting a chub. But yeah if anyone has a webms of it I would appreciate it. In order to be a fan fiction it would have to have been made by fans of Tolkien and his work instead of corporate c**ts making sloppa for "the modern audience" AKA their direct social circle. These people HATE Tolkien and his fans like they hate everything that working class people enjoy. Their biggest problem is that you don't enjoy anything new that they create so they must parasitise the things you do like, twist it into their image and wear it like a skinsuit.

Unironically, they intended the first season to be entirely intro, setup and world building because they are trying to copy the structure of LOTR
So ROP s1 = the first half of FOTR where it is just some walking, talking and a couple of small action scenes then they get to the council of Elrond where the real plot begins. This is where S2 starts.
The people making it acknowledged how 'slow' they knew the first season would feel but think the payoff will be worth it
More contemporary example of this would be DUNC P1 vs P2

      >Huh duh nobody will watch it
They are including everything you thought should have been in s1, everything. Magic rings, dark lords, huge battles, all those book characters, creatures, locations, etc. everything. Quick paced, high action, loads of character drama s1 setup culminating in a genuinely huge siege
Amazon will shill S2 to the high heavens, full weight of the entire company pushing it. Nobody will escape.

Amazing. You can spew all that, and think it means anything. You have no idea what Tolkien is about, what makes it resonate, not the slightest clue. To you, it's just DnD campaign slop. The reason people are willing to forgive the Jackson films, despite all their faults, is that he at least understood the core of the story. RoP can't even get the basic tone right

You can call me a shill all you like but it's clear the people making ROP do too, but maybe the direction of travel for the show isn't the most obvious yet.

People lump in alot of their problems with s1 on Galadriel, but that's kind of the point. She is a problem and intentionally un-Tolkienian when you meet her.
She has isolated herself and letting herself be overcome with despair, choosing vengeance over mercy and all other sorts of un-Tolkienian behaviour. It's not how a LOTR character *should* act, that's what leads to failure. So now they will move her to choosing hope>despair, finding the light in the darkness and collectivism> individualism.
You cannot tell me these are not core Tolkien themes.

            >You cannot tell me these are not core Tolkien themes.
They're not. Those are especially not the themes of the first and second ages, which RoP is supposed to be based on. Name one tale from the Silmarillion or any other First or Second age story where that was the theme.

                >Of Beren and Lúthien
What does that have to do with collectivism or individualism, or choosing hope over despair? The theme of that story is love and sacrifice. It's Romeo and Juliet, but human and elve.
                >the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath
A story which marks the beginning of the end of the elves in Middle Earth and more israeliteel stealing and murder before the silmarils are finally lost for good. Again, how is the theme of collectivism or hope? The theme here is the pride of the elves being their ultimate undoing. Morgoth was defeated, but the entire western half of the continent was lost for these israeliteels, and in the end, all the bloodshed, wars, and kin slaying meant nothing. They return to Valinor empty-handed.

This is different from most shows because they are not making it season by season wondering if it will get renewed
So they can spend an entire season just to intro the actual story to come because it's all planned out and there is no need to give everything to the audience from the get go.

    >WE TRIED TO STAY TRUE TO TOLKIEN, YOU'RE JUST THINKING OF JACKSON

    lol no.

Nothing about this shit show is "true to tolkien."

"Sauron" has like 50 coincidental bullshit events happen just to get him to the spot to forge the rings, and then he forgot to forge 80% of them. Whoops.

i don't like Peter Jackson's movies (except for The Hobbit because those dwarves are cute) and i still watched Rings of Power just because it was so expensive. i was often bored. it just isn't engaging.

      Please see

Nobody will escape.

      and

This is different from most shows because they are not making it season by season wondering if it will get renewed
So they can spend an entire season just to intro the actual story to come because it's all planned out and there is no need to give everything to the audience from the get go.
Like the director quoting Dickens 'make them wait'

RoP is going to be waaay bigger than Lotr

a good show has me interested in the very first shot. that doesn't get in the way of setup if they know what they're doing
