You can tell there was a lot of Avatar influence on the creators. Frosta is Toph, Bow is clearly Sokka, and She-Ra has a lot of parallels with the Avatar, and I think they were trying to do a Zuko with Catra but it didn't work out as well.

It was a very fun show with a novel central romance/tension with Catra and Adora. I liked the final villain too and thought he had a great monologue.

I wasn't really feeling this show till it pulled up it's pants near the end.
For a majority of it, it has this awkward "quirky" tone where it wasn't quite comedic but it clearly had no interest in being serious outside of isolated, spaced out scenes. And it was hard to get invested at all until it gained the confidence to take itself seriously consistently.

The *Season 1* episode "Promise" was the most adult depiction of real child abuse that any cartoon has ever done. Way more mature than what Avatar did with Zuko even. Anyone can say "if you parent beats you they're bad" but how many cartoons teach a kid what the much more common reality of emotion abuse looks like?

Zuko's abuse made for a more compelling story, but it's way more fictional than what Catra goes through.

I watched this show for the first time this year after dismissing it and I really enjoyed it. The last season and ending though didn't do it for me. Horde Prime was a fine villain he's not really where my complaints lie, but Catra is one of the most cartoonishly evil villains I have seen and to see her randomly turn good after her actions end up with consequences for the 900th time felt kind of stupid. They extended a thousand olive branches to her and she spat on each one.
That being said though, early Catra to Wasteland Catra is my favorite character in the show. She is such a petty fricker and I love her.
I think Catra's a great character study on how being abused as a child really just fricks you up real bad for a real long time. She didn't deserve redemption, but the good guys, especially Adora, were just paragon enough to help her find it anyway. Sometimes it's nice to see people go out of their way to give miserable frickups more chances and effort than they deserve. Lord knows plenty of us here could use that.
I liked Catra's redemption, because you really don't get to see all of it. We see her take steps to become better, but she's still an butthole.
I did enjoy it.
I wish we got a follow-up where they had adventures in space.
