It's a mix of the best writers of the show not being involved in the comics and the nature of the medium of comic books.
The Comic books need drama and for things to go wrong for the characters to have a compelling story.
The authors think it would be less interesting to have a story where all the characters have really strong and healthy romantic relationships, and so make it more 'dramatic'
I question that a bit, since basically everyone who is going to buy those comics is a huge Avatar fan anyway, they could probably get away with fan service slice-of-life bullshit and sell just as well.

I don’t know, man. I like that Sokka has a girl, but I liked the way he got on with Ty Lee throughout the series. Suki being with Zuko would make room for that but it just makes things awkward and a seedbed for drama.
I think I’d rather stick to fanfic about Sokka starting to have a thing for Ty Lee and then dating her at the end of the show. Making Zuko bang his bodyguard, who he knows is his friend’s gf, just seems wrong to me.

I don't hate Suki and Zuko and I'll admit I was one of the early fans of Zuko just being with Jin.
However, I just feel like it's unfair to Mai, who stayed loyal to him, even when dishonored and exiled and even willing to stand up to Azula out of love.

The story is about Mai and Zuko having separation time and Ty Lee being a buffer and go between.
That is all, and nothing more.
Bulk of the story dialogue is basically a recap/retelling of things that happened in the show and getting two perspectives on events in retrospect. Lots of reminiscing and getting clarification on stuff.
I imagine Zuko wouldn't talk to Mai or anyone else about Jin, Song or living in Ba Sing Se having come to terms with a new life/new normal with bright prospects and then having it snatched away.
They would talk about childhood stuff and even revisit their time on Ember Island.
Also, when talking about their relationship, how neither Ty Lee or Zuko really interact as the four friends are somewhat paired up as Ty Lee hangs out with Azula more and Mai hung out with Zuko more. I'm not going to touch too much on Azula and Ty Lee being deep lovers, but Ty Lee would reveal that Azula and her would relieve stress out of convivence fooling around a few times as gal pals and as mistress and vassal. She'd say she enjoyed most of it, but then there was sometimes where it was fear of retaliation and a social trap due to court intrigue.
Let's be real both Ty Lee and Mai were probably prospective wives for Zuko as they are both non bending nobles trying to tie into the line of the Fire lord. However, we know both Ty Lee and Mai really didn't care about that, though it is interesting that both girls besides being pretty are athletic, sneaky and martial artist.
They talk about Azula a bit and how they are dealing with it. They talk about how they are getting along with Team Avatar and the Kiyoshi Warriors and what they are up to.
Really this story is lots of talking on couch and then bed with minimal sexual content, but the plot is about sex, love and baby making.
After some making out, Zuko almost goes all the way with Ty Lee, but she stops him before penetration and talks about how much Mai loves him, stayed loyal and even risked death standing up to Azula.
Zuko is given some "relief" and post as they are holding each other, Ty Lee talks about the serious practical use of a surrogate, but says she best not be a candidate and pretend not to know, as to not painfully embarrass and shame Mai.
Then Ty Lee leaves and tells Zuko that she will have a chat with Mai and try to plant subtle suggestion and encourage Mai to return home.

I imagine Zuko wouldn't talk to Mai or anyone else about Jin, Song or living in Ba Sing Se having come to terms with a new life/new normal with bright prospects and then having it snatched away.
They would talk about childhood stuff and even revisit their time on Ember Island.
Also, when talking about their relationship, how neither Ty Lee or Zuko really interact as the four friends are somewhat paired up as Ty Lee hangs out with Azula more and Mai hung out with Zuko more. I'm not going to touch too much on Azula and Ty Lee being deep lovers, but Ty Lee would reveal that Azula and her would relieve stress out of convivence fooling around a few times as gal pals and as mistress and vassal. She'd say she enjoyed most of it, but then there was sometimes where it was fear of retaliation and a social trap due to court intrigue.
Let's be real both Ty Lee and Mai were probably prospective wives for Zuko as they are both non bending nobles trying to tie into the line of the Fire lord. However, we know both Ty Lee and Mai really didn't care about that, though it is interesting that both girls besides being pretty are athletic, sneaky and martial artist.
They talk about Azula a bit and how they are dealing with it. They talk about how they are getting along with Team Avatar and the Kiyoshi Warriors and what they are up to.
Really this story is lots of talking on couch and then bed with minimal sexual content, but the plot is about sex, love and baby making.
After some making out, Zuko almost goes all the way with Ty Lee, but she stops him before penetration and talks about how much Mai loves him, stayed loyal and even risked death standing up to Azula.
Zuko is given some "relief" and post as they are holding each other, Ty Lee talks about the serious practical use of a surrogate, but says she best not be a candidate and pretend not to know, as to not painfully embarrass and shame Mai.
