Animation is actually really hard and takes a long time. Since they put so much effort into the fight scenes, they had to cut corners elsewhere. There are actually a few great tricks animators can use to save time, and you're just looking at one.

I own all the hardcovers, and enjoyed them. but thus far the show is really improving upon them, the writing is vastly more mature and thoughtful.
And of course the ultra-violence is more impactful animated. And the voice-casting is fantastic. It's not Studio Madhouse, but even Amazon would balk at the price of 7 seasons of Madhouse tier animation.
if season 2 ends with the first angstrom levy fight, the season 3 will probably end with the invincible war at episode 7 and then the first conquest fight as a finale, i cant see it going any other way
