The writer's room for the show is majority female so I doubt those reviews are accurate.

Shogun is in a historical setting where rigid traditional social order is incredibly important to how character and narrative progress.
Even comparatively mild changes to sneak modernity in have the potential to completely derail what Shogun is. Because ultimately Blackthorne's story is about how completely trapped he is after the novelty and fantasy wear off.
Does that guy still draw comics? I want to see his meltdown over this show - assuming of course that they don't cut the romance plot that's a major part of the novel's story arc, but hell, who the frick knows.
