theatre has been culturally progressive way, way longer than film and television have been. race swap, gender swap shit has been commonplace in theatre for quite some time. there have been all black productions of shakespeare's works before (and i mean in europe or america, not in like africa where it would make sense) and it didn't raise as much of a ruckus as this. nobody really complained about this because nobody in the modern world, besides people that would be accepting of that, cares about stage acting anyway.
