Everyone shoves things in their ass in American prison. If not drugs, then at least shank blades (suitcased inside a toothbrush holder). They get searched every time they between the prison and the yard, so the only way to get weapons to the yard is either to build one out there, or to bring it (inside your ass).

He's in MDC, a revolving door of Federal detainees / inmates in NYC. It's not that complicated. No one's gonna be super established there, and the politics are far from what is portrayed in Shotcaller. It looks like he's just renting muscle for day-to-day protection from opportunistic detainees in a chaotic jail environment. He's not actually rolling with the Bloods or anything like that.

Yeah, that part always stuck out to me. It just doesn't seem very likely Money and his family would get away and not be greenlit. Made for a great ending, though.
My personal theory (or cope?) is that the AB seems to respect a very literal or mundane understanding of "might is right", and if Money was so incredibly badass enough that he fought off the Beast, why would anyone mess with him? Shit, if he's earning, he's earning. If he puts in the work and still calls good shots, why waste strength on a seemingly very good asset?
It also isn't necessarily likely that anyone else would've figured out the inconsistency regarding Shotgun's death. Unless the Beast phoned in his suspicions right away, and maybe he did, but did he really feel the need to? Probably didn't, he's super sociopathic and obviously extremely attracted to power if he's willing to go through such huge lengths to be a powerful criminal despite being in the SHU or even in solitary. I think what Money told the guard probably convinces the other woods that Beast attacked him first and since he defended himself and killed Beast in that situation, they'd accept him as leader by proxy. Some disbelief must be suspended but I think you can logicalize it.
If nobody knows about Shotgun's death + the text message (which is still possible), then the story can be spun that the Beast had a fit and paid the price for it. But Money is a guy who always keeps his cool, so he becomes a natural replacement.
Yes, the movie establishes just how easily Money gets on the good side of the woods and becomes trust worthy which serves to explain the ending's aftermath.
