It depends on what they choose to do, there are a lot of paths they can take if basing movies off the games. Most of them have bowser as the baddy so we'll probably get that.

I personally think we're going to have a super mario world movie with yoshi and the koopalings coming into play. Though I'd be very interested if they made an original villain with bowser as an antihero alongside mario. Maybe you could base it off the alphadream games in some way.

Koopalings usurp Bowser and he has to reluctantly team up with Mario to stop them.

I’ve always liked the koopalings, don’t know why that is. Bowser had Ludwig’s piano.

What are they based on? What’s their motif?

I want to see who they get as a new villain. King Boo?

should be the smithy gang, but they can't use those characters and wart isn't canon

I don’t want to speculate with characters they can’t use.

        >Mario
        >canon
First of all, how is Wart not canon? He's actually made by Nintendo unlike the Mario RPG characters, and even if he wasn't canon, the movies play very loosely with Mario lore, like using stuff from the Super Show.

        Canon is whatever Nintendo decides
Like how the Koopa Kids were Bowser's children
But now only Bowser Jr is his child

You can adopt kids, Anon. If anything, Junior is the outlier to this family dynamic. Who did Bowser screw?

Bowser is for the most part irredeemable in the movieverse

      >King Boo
They refused to use his Luigi's mansion design in the first movie, no thanks

Make the next movie a Mario Kart racing movie with Rosalina, introducing all the characters from other franchises. Then make #3 a Super Smash bros style fighting tournament.

He could be like Eggman where he's the main villain using another villain but then the villain turns on him and he has to work together with Mario.

As much as I'd enjoy that, I can't see that working with Movie Bowser. Game Bowser loves playing the villain, Movie Bowser is a bad guy because he's just a huge dick.

Bowser Jr and the crazy cat jumper ninjas. Also they should incorporate mario party into the story.

The first movie was too basic for him to be an ally in the next one.

For a character they struggled with during development they really perfectly captured Bowser and what makes him an endearing character. I could easily see movie Bowser being an ally out of necessity and betraying everyone once the opportunity presents itself.

He'll probably stay the main villain, that's generally what Bowser does. Also, I could see other villains alongside Bowser, like Junior, Wario + Waluigi, and maybe the Koopalings. I'd looove to see Cackletta and Fawful be main villains in a movie somewhere down the line, with Bowser joining forces with the heroes, till he turns into Bowletta, but I know for a fact that'll never happen.

The next movie could be a combination of Super Mario Sunshine with elements of SMB3 and SMW; the protags are on vacation, Kamek makes a magic clone of Bowser in the form of Bowser Jr. Several attempts to clone failed beforehand, but could then lead into the formation of the Koopalings.
Junior busts Bowser out of his prison, they get to develop father-and-son bond while taking over the Mushroom Kingdom together. Since Yoshi was teased in the last movie, he could form a bound with either Mario or Luigi (Insert Mama-Luigi joke here) while helping them save the day.
The overall theme of this sequel is family bonds and all that. The Koopalings could grow jealous of Bowser "playing favorites" and attempt to usurp him. This fails towards the end of the movie, leading to the Koopalings begging Bowser for forgiveness and him demoting them from his heirs to lackeys.
Post-credit scene can show Kamek making evil clones of Mario and Luigi, aka Wario and Waluigi.

I like it. Sequel bait, developing Bowser into less of a pure villain, good way of introducing the characters.

Make him a passive threat and have bowser Jr. Be the next villain like in Sunshine. He'll bring in laughs but also provide another obstacle for Mario to overcome.

The Mario Movie left a lot of room for things that could happen in a sequel. I would honestly like it if Mario and everyone else intentionally freed him to take on a worse enemy as a "just this once" sort of plot.
Since a big part of bowsers character is his ability to make temporary peace with Mario when they aren't fighting, it would be nice if they mirrored that at some point.

Bowser is most fun when he's a wild card that can be a legitimately threatening villain or a big vaguely pathetic likable lug. He's a little bland when he's just a threat through and through.

He needs to be in the DK spin-off, he needs to have at least one scene where he wrecks Donkey, and he needs to be voiced by Benedict Campbell

Villain who temporarily helps out to get his kingdom back.
    >Wario and Waluigi are made to keep Mario and Luigi busy while the Koopas break out Bowser
    >Wario and Waluigi betray the Koopas and enslave them and come up with a plan that’ll destroy everyone
    >Mario and crew realize they can’t fight it by themselves and have to release Bowser
    >Bowser and Mario tag team and take down Wario’s empire
    >Bowser is back in charge, but the Koopa army is crippled so he leaves but vows to come back for Mario’s head

I really like the idea that Wario is just a goofy chaotic evil that is single-handedly more powerful and unpredictable than the entirety of Bowser's army. Like Mario if he was a demented Rambo-esque guerilla warrior.

Have him do what he does in one of the Mario RPGs, where he's teamed up with them, the suddenly remembers how much he hates Mario and attacks him right before the third act.

Why would he be an ally? A third party in the struggle against a new bad guy, sure, but an ally? He casually murders people. Why do people try to make evil psychopaths into good guys for no reason?
