Should I watch Neon Genesis Evangelion? This shot from it I randomly stumbled upon intrigued me but its fan base is making me afraid it'll be pseudslop.
Should I watch Neon Genesis Evangelion? This shot from it I randomly stumbled upon intrigued me but its fan base is making me afraid it'll be pseudslop.
Should I
BRAAAAAAAAAAAP
Depends. How old are you?
I started out thinking of some millenial/zoomer distinction but it seems to me that he just shouldn't watch it if he doesn't want to transition, regardless of age.
22.
I trust Cinemaphile's opinion more.
Proper viewing order for all the time loops:
1st loop: Manga 14 volumes/97 chapters
2nd loop: Evangelion episodes 1-26
3rd loop: Evangelion episodes1-20, directors cut episodes 21-24, Death (True)2, End of Evangelion movie
4th loop: Evangelion Rebuild movies 1.11, 2.22, 3.33, 3.0+1.11, Shin Godzilla
>Evangelion Rebuild movies 1.11, 2.22, 3.33, 3.0+1.11
Frick no
It's notable that Shin Godzilla wasn't rejected as part of the viewing order here.
Its a decent movie but should be taken as completely unrelated in it's own vacuum, even with the rest of the Godzilla movies.
>Watching Rebuild
Don't do it
The manga sucks and isn't the original work
The manga started before the anime aired.
It was made during the development of the series and was designed to supplement it. It wasn't created first.
Halo is a book series because the Fall of Reach released first.
Can you tell me why? Because I was just thinking of collecting evangelion manga, I never read or watch evangelion before
This is horrible advice and I wish people would stop parroting this headcanon that 25/26 and EoE are happening simultaneously
25/26 are canon, EoE was Anno going "okay frick you here's the bad ending"
They're different versions of the same ending. They aren't happening concurrently though. The tv ending is abstract born out of time constraints. EoE was intended as a remake of the tv ending, and contains several new plot points and themes that were informed by the tv ending (Shinji jerking off to Asuka in the hospital being a direct mirror of otaku fans jacking it to/objectifying Asuka irl / the live action sequence)
Black person shinji rejects instrumentality in EoE
He rejects it in 25/26 too, wise guy. The whole climax of those two episodes is Shinji deciding that he's responsible for himself and how he feels, and that dealing with pain is worth being able to enjoy life and love with other people.
your literal headcanon
Watch the show.
>i can love myself
is the exact opposite of
>wow everything is nothingness now we are no longer ourselves
yeah I said they're different endings we don't see Shinji reject instrumentality directly in the tv show, but he does come to a similar life affirming ephiany
Aren't both endings just different versions of Shinji rejecting Instrumentality?
There's no bad ending. 25/26 are what happen during EoE while Shinji is internally debating on whether to Instrumentality or not.
That's headcanon. The original ending and EoE are wildly different in intent and tone and significant parts of End of Evangelion are within shinji's head anyways
That also works to be more precise with viewing everything in one shot but didn't want to set off the concurrence argument.
The only difference between something fun, deep, or pseudslop is how you relate to it.
it's pretty good yeah
>pseudslop
Frick off, zoomer, and never look back.
you're trying too hard
>Should I watch Neon Genesis Evangelion?
Yes.
Go ask the anime board then. Spastic frick.
if you are old enough to browse Cinemaphile you are too old to watch this.
Just like anything, watch it, form your own opinions, ignore the fanbase entirely.
You should watch Gunbuster and Nadia
No it's dumb kabbalah indoctrination for 80s kids and not worth the time or bullshit
>inb4 kabbalah is just a metaphor for depression/he just thought it looked cool
kinda funny you ask this op because currently i rewatch it for the fifth time. it really holds up the test of time.
the pacing is fantastic. the characters and their development are great. the action sequences are all unique. the ost is fantastic. its hand drawn godness
Yeah /m/ hates it and their memes have extended to the rest of Cinemaphile, also is popular so people here will tell you its shit.
>/m/ memes extending anywhere
That board is a ghost town. The last time anything of impact sitewide was in like 2007
It's a good series, but it's also baby's first 2deep4you series.
It would blow your mind if you are a teenager. Or a manchild.
Yes, watch it.
I… is that in it?
It's good. The TV series is solid but End of Evangelion is a certifiable classic. Obviously, nothing else related to Eva is good as the insane marketability tore the series and the animation studio Gainax apart.
>End of Evangelion is a certifiable classic.
No it isn't
It's the only good part of Eva
It's a Japanese cartoon from 1997 and they just re-showed it in theaters in america
I''ve tried to watch through the series twice but it's too much of a slog.
What episode was the filter that stopped your progress?
Like I said, I've stopped twice. I wanted to get to the 'deep' parts but I just don't have the patience for every bit that seems like it's going nowhere.
It's like EVERY discussion of it is about what comes near the end.
Its good, ignore all the homosexuals saying that its pretentious, Eva isn't deep nor does it ever pretend to be but its not meaningless nonsense either
No it's fricking boring rudimentary dogshit. Only 15 year old pseuds like it. It's a carbon copy of getter robo until the EoE which is just doomslop that still to this day makes no sense unless you headcanon it
yes you should
you cannot understand anime or for that matter internet culture unless you've watched NGE
I just started watching it on Netflix. I was born in 95 and I’ve always seen this show referenced or mentioned. Watching it blindly I really enjoy it. I love how atmospheric it is with certain shots and I absolutely adore the angels and how other worldly they are. I’m on episode 10
But which girl do you like most, and why is it Asuka?
>omg half japanese with le heckin red hair AND she screams and yells and cries all the fricking time
Asuka reddit soryu
>Liking a young and hot firecracker is r*ddit
Call me a redditor then
>Watching on Netflix
Cutting fly me to the moon is unforgivable. Find it online, I like the sephrotic release
Darling in the franxx does everything neon genesis did a million times better.
Neon has a good premise but it shits on itself over practically everything. It's a 6/10 show that diehards will claim is a 10 yet in reality is a story that makes little to no sense, shinji is the most unlikable mc in history, Rei's character goes nowhere, penguin is never explained, misato doesn't get enough screen time or growth.
i know you're trolling but for anyone who hasn't seen darling in the toilet, it's unironically the definition of overrated shit. even normalgays say it sucks. it wasnt even top 10 anime that season let alone year. watching that garbage is legit killing you by wasting time you'll never get back.
>pseudslop
It is.
yeah its a masterpiece of course you should.
even if you dont like it, its worth it just for cultural relevancy. it is one of those things where you notice its influence in everything else after you watch it.
what influence did evangelion have
Gundam already did the child soldier gimmick to death
Asuka appears in the MEMEME song for 10 whole seconds. That's basically it
Nge inspired an entire near decade long wave of 2deep4u media. You don't have stuff like Paranoia Agent, Rahxephon, or Lain to name a few, without NGE sparking a midwit philosophical gold rush. Its influence is readily apparent from 1997 to the 2010's at least.
You shouldn't be on Cinemaphile if you haven't watched Eva.
It is definitely overrated pseudslop but I'd say you should watch it anyways because it has some cool moments.
Its a neat show with really stellar audio and music, and cool direction occasionally, but 90% of it is purely aesthetic and has no deeper meaning beyond looking cool. It hits hard if you're like 14-19. But your mileage will definitely vary any older than that.
it's completely nonsense like most gnostic shit
the teens are hot though and the biggest disappointment for me was shinji and asuka never frick. it would be 10x better if they knew ecstasy in each others arms. it would also lend weight to the bad shit that happens to them.
as it is it's just two awkward kids i give zero shits about, so the whole show is a waste of time.
Gnosticucks never recovered from this.
Fricking savage
Eva isn't even Gnostic.
WHY IS THIS ON Cinemaphile
Because anime discussion on Cinemaphile is impossible
evangelion is certified Cinemaphile kino
also Cinemaphile is a shithole where you can't discuss eva without mentall illness and shitposting
>evangelion is certified Cinemaphile kino
It's not. It's a Japanese animation show. Get a grip and post on the right board.
Why is there a dozen simpson threads on Cinemaphile? Why don't you shut the frick up?
Evangelion is a television show that aired on television. And you're on an anime website made for the discussion of anime and Japanese culture.
Cinemaphile is for American movies and shows.
It's a television show you stupid frick
I loved it when I was 17 but IIRC there's way too much garbage and filler in it for just a few short scenes with any payoff.
I want to frick asuka unprotected
i'm pretty sure ep24 is the reason i turned out gay
It wasn't because you were molested?
It's alright. The ending is laughably shit because they ran out of the money and had to make a movie with a real ending. It's got some cool things, the tech limitations are neat, the angel/monster designs are cool. As a kid I was annoyed by the constant child-in-trauma angle they were going for but maybe I'd appreciate it more as an adult.
Did anyone pick up on the Shinji being trans? In the movie she ends up not even transitioning. “Disgusting” Asuka says because she sees her for what she is. A lesbian. I know there’s more movies or whatever that continue the series but those seem like fanfic bullshit and I refuse to watch.
you have to go back
Asuka is more brash and has more masculine energy because she takes the lead but she’s also a lipstick lesbian. Shinji is timid and shy and feminine because she was born in the wrong body. It’s why she feels like she doesn’t belong ever.
Invincible is the worst american attempt at anime yet
Anyone remember when Cinemaphile was full of NGE content? Like tons of image macros and waifu posting and stuff?
Yes, in the before times. Now we're surrounded by third worlders and normalgays who are confused as to why we're even talking about anime.
Anime is one of the most normalgay things ever.
Only twittergay nu-anime.
Watch it and decide for yourself if it was worth it.
it is pseudo slop, but it’s easy on the eyes. Relax and unwind brother and just enjoy the ride.
Don’t worry, it doesn’t even try to be deep
Yeah it's a really well made cartoon with good characters and a good story. It's really well directed as well. Yes, cartoons have directors. Episode 1 is a master class in cartoon direction. It tells you so much with so few words and sets up so many payoffs for later in the show. It slumps a bit in the middle of the show but keep going. The movie is great too, really good artwork and stuff
its an incredible show
>whole point of the series is stopping the angels
>just so they can do what the angels wanted to do
garbage
There's only room for one lifeform on the planet. If the angels got their Instrumentality then mankind would be gone. This is the least confusing part of the show and somehow you fricked it.
If you do decide to watch it just watch the two movies. The tv series is a waste of time.
moron
90% of the 26 episodes of eva is just filler and aesthetics. The rest is interesting battle scenes, talk scenes, and babby's philosophy 101 with a few pseudo-redpills. End of Evangelion serves as a good nightcap that makes all the 9 hours you wasted watching this shit worthwhile. Rebuild movies are weeb fanservice shit and should be avoided. Manga is shit. That is all.
you dont know the meaning of filler
More than 25% of all screentime is comprised of still shots. People meme about the kaworu crush scene while ignoring that it happens nonstop in a smaller scale.
they add to the atmosphere and are a good example of using limited resources to help the story
>People meme about the kaworu crush scene while ignoring that it happens nonstop in a smaller scale.
Hey that was actually a kino scene.
the stupid elevator one was not
>dey aint be no muhfuggin splosions dawg dis sheeit is mid af
The true fanbase only talks about red vs blue the pseud audience are all homosexuals.
at what age is it too late to watch this? I'm 32 and I've been so heavily exposed to evangelion through Cinemaphile and friends over the past 14 years that it feels like I already know it all.
Never too old to watch Evangelion. Just don't fall in love with the girls at your age
>when i first watched Eva the girls were older than me
>now i'm over twice their age
Time moves way too quickly.
Rebuild girls are your age, just cursed to stay in young bodies
worth a watch for the memes. you've probably missed out on so many good memes Cinemaphile has produced since its inception just by being out of the loop. also memes/references outside Cinemaphile as well.
its never too late. the themes are universal
It's good when you're young.
Yes, it’s legitimately one of the coolest anime ever. First, watch the original TV series (yes, even the last two episodes people b***hed about), then End of Evangelion (widely agreed to be the series’ peak). If you enjoyed all that, watch the Rebuilds - four movies that retread the OG plot to start, then pivot to an alternate timeline. I’ll forewarn you that the third Rebuild is a tough watch (and probably the lowest point of the series, imo), but the fourth one redeems it big time and ends the Evangelion continuity on a high note. Too bad you didn’t watch it sooner though, since they just screened End of Evangelion for the first time in American theaters a couple weeks ago
>inb4 tl;dr
Do yourself a favor and watch it
seeing that in theaters was one of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life and reminded me why i fell in love with film in the first place
Amen anon. The way the final scene ended and the lights went up with no credits left to roll was genuinely harrowing
