Big fan of watching people standing around talking, I take it?
Most of the best film moments in history are monologues or conversations. But sure, words are le bad.
>Most of the best film moments in history are monologues or conversations.
says who???
Tarantino.
>tarantino is great at dialogue
can we please stop with this meme?
Big fan of watching people standing around staring while music plays, I take it?
Absolutely pwned
Why yes I'm a big fan of Tarantino, how could you tell?
Show don't tell doesn't mean excluding dialogue, having character A meet character B and go
>My man!
Is still showing their relationship. You know just from what you've seen they're friends, telling would be him looking at character B and going
>There's my best friend in the whole world!
That's telling us what he is to you, not showing it.
You must understand. Autists need things spelled out because they cannot understand subtext. If it is not explicitly stated, to them it becomes fan fiction.
But if he just straight up said "There's my best friend in the whole world!" then it's showing you what kind of guy he is. Because only certain types of people talk that way.
This is actually a good thing, hence "the left can't meme". They feel the need to state everything explicitly instead of allowing something to be implied or just common knowledge.
>the left can’t meme
Interesting theory let’s check the video evidence shall we?
>leftists can't meme
>instantly brings up a 150 second video to disprove of this
>DUDE THEY LEFT CHEKHOV'S GUN UNUSED THAT'S FILM LANGUAGE 101
The worst is when they don’t follow the screen movement film 101. Walking from audience left to right is saying you are walking east, walking audience right to left is walking west. Or At lease be consistent.
The new planet of the apes movie broke this screen logic and it really suffers for it, everything feels like it takes place in the same weird area because you don’t get the feeling they are walking in one direction
Nowadays we have Rian Johnson's school of filmmaking - tell, but show completely the opposite.
>edge don't cum
>doesn't explain further than a vague blunt statement
>uses image to imply meaning
>uses single character to preceed statement to imply further
>ironically proved his own point against himself in his post
excellent
>proved that it's possible to show something partly means that you PROVED that you should NEVER EVER FRICKING TELL NO MATTER WHAT EVER!!!
Shut up!!!!!! You fricking soulless idiot.
>bad writing
>visual storytelling
Except when showing didn't drive the point home so now we gotta make the sequel where we tell, just in case they do another heckin' media illiteracy
Its a moronic trope. I would much rather be told than "shown".
Name a single tv or movie that benefitted from "showing" over telling
"Battle Ship Potemkin"
Now tell me what moves benefit from telling and not showing.
You're mother told me she wants me.
Yeah, told you she wants you to stop trying to suck her husband's wiener. Answer the question. There are plenty of examples btw.
Funny anon very funny.
Like almost every single one of them. All shows do both, and some know which is appropriate for which situation.
if you want to be told something why don't you read a book instead?
>less is more
The lies are in the dialogue, the truth is in the visuals
>The lies are in the dialogue, the truth is in the visuals
I love Kelly Reichardt so much
>I love Kelly Reichardt so much
I'm considering that movies could be released in a format with and without narration, the narrated version taking up ten to twenty times as long as the unnarrated version just to add context to what's going.
that's a good quote, but I've seen a lot of morons who think it literally means “dialogue bad,” while you can easily show something through the dialogue
the point is that if you want to convey to the audience that a character is charismatic for example, a good way is to create a scene in which that character talks to people and convinces them of something through his speech and eristics
the bad way is to have some other character say “this guy is really charismatic,” while we never see that for ourselves
I disagree. Show don't tell has become dogmatic. So that scene where the character shows he's charismatic will be forced and contrived and written solely because the writer was taught that's the correct way to write. Something that could have been established with one line of dialogue.
>Tarantinesque
Exposition is often my favorite part of a movie. Depends how it’s done. Show AND tell. just do it well.
just read the plot on wikipedia at that point
people say this but then details fly over their head and they call the movie convoluted
No one looks like any of these images or says any of these phrases
Death to wojakers.
>character dies on screen
>Villain taunt the hero
>Hero is visibly upset and gets angry
Vs
>Character gets stabbed
>"Please I don't want to die"
>"Time is running especially for maggots like you"
>Villain delivers final blow
>"Noooo" screams hero
>Villain turns to hero
>"Senseless slaughter won't satisfy me no longer. I have great hopes that you will be a worthy challenge or else I will forget your name like I already forgot that of this insect before me"
>Hero gets angry and draws his sword
>"You went too far, he was my friend and i will avenge his life"
the second case sounds pretty kino
Kino
downright shakespearean
/qa/ lost
>turn off your brain and enjoy it
that tenet can be used to send the message in a more fundamental way, but most of the time it just means not having the courage to be sincere
Shot.
Reverse shot.
>camera is on the character who is listening
