They fricked up by setting up Jaune in the role of the protagonist/Everyman/audience surrogate self insert. The viewers can instinctively pick up on storytelling structure that makes Jaune have a heroes journey more than Ruby does. But the writers constantly including him as essentially the fifth member of RWBY and having so much screen time doesn’t help
Do you actually know what "a hero's journey" means? Ruby's storyline so far can be traced to it pretty well, it's just really slow.

Jaune's story is pretty much a subversion of the Hero's Journey.

I want Ruby to defeat Cinder. I don't care about Jaune. I don't hate him, but I think people like you who obsess over him as if he was the protagonist should leave, because the show is not for you and was never meant for you. It's for people who want to see a cute sexy girl fight and save the day, not be helpless damsel in distress eye candy to the generic boring shonen protagonist.

I also hate that he steals screen time and I think that all of Jaune's characteristics should be Ruby's, but to be fair he is the best character in the series currently, Blake has been dead weight since season 3, no one knows what do with Yang, Weiss has the same damn character arc every season "it doesn't matter what my family's legacy is, I'm weiss", ruby is boring and they don't even make an effort to explore her "SILVER EYES" legacy.
at this point the series should be called "JAUNE ARC and his adventures with rwby"
By the moment Jaune have his own spin off, no one will have reason to watch RWBY, that's why they keep him around.

This guy is basically why I've no interest in the series. The concept blew up BECAUSE of Ruby. I don't see a Jaune concept trailer getting millions of views. What a fricking shame.
