its fairly common in this show for characters to display powers they rarely or never use again

She's already one of the most dangerous people on the planet why would that matter.
If done right it could be quite interesting to have Finn and Jake be friends with a characters whose basically the equivalent of a level 100 character while they're like level 20. Like Marcy isn't a main character (or shouldn't be at least) he being insanely strong doesn't really change anything.
Only problem is that it makes her kinda seem like an butthole when she doesn't help out with stuff like the Lich or Orgalorg
She's kind of like Billy in that regard. Been around for ages, did the whole hero thing, then at some point she got jaded or bored and stopped caring about problems that didn't involve her personally
She could be unaware of such situations or just establish that she deals with similar threats on her own.

Not really true. Jake can turn his body in to any shape, he just molds it to look like whatever. Marceline's shapeshifting comes from the Hierophant and only allows her to mimic animals. She's creative and unorthodox about it which lets her do things like in the OP but ultimately their powers work in completely different ways and Jake's is much more versatile.

Jake's powers are not fully explored. He kinda discovers that he can do more than just reform the body like putty, then he reverts, and it's never touched upon again.
1. If the powerful characters acted competently most of the story lines wouldn't happen. Wouldn't it be rational to remove the extremely powerful artifact from the mad man pervert? Remember, no one other than Marcy knows he is anything other than the Ice King.
2. A lot of American shows use writers rooms where different writers lead different episodes, this seems to lead to WILDLY varying power levels in characters. I kinda hate it even if I get why they do it.
Ice king is like someone who has the potential to be overpowered yet his madness limits him
The Ice king is like a mad man with a house full of guns who is constantly fireing them into the ground to kill mole people. Anyone rational would remove the guns before he accidentally kills someone, or worse his madness gets worse and he decides the local school is the beach head of a moleman invasion.

disagree. Jake can only change his shape and size, it's very powerful but Marceline can do that and change her biology, material etc
If her power is anything like Hierophants (whom she stole the power from, so it most likely is), she can turn into nearly anything.
for example, Jake can make a scorpion tail out of his body, but its still dog fur and flesh. Marceline can do that and give it real venom, real armor, etc

This means that she can canonically shapeshift herself some massive lactating breasts, which is all that really matter.
